The study examined the status of the secondary schools in terms of funding available to public secondary schools in Ogun State. Methodology: The study applied Structural Functionalist theory and adopted qualitative method of data collection. Five (5) Key Informant Interviews (KII) and In-depth Interviews (IDI) were conducted respectively for both the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) union in Ogun State. Result was analysed and transcribed via qualitative content analysis Findings: Findings revealed that teacher performance was not encouraging due to poor motivating factors; running of free education was more problematic and cumbersome due to inadequate funding by the government. Conclusion: The study recommended that Government need to abolish the free running of education and if not opt in or re-introduce the Parent Teacher Association (PTA levy) to the public secondary school as this will screen out unserious students who constitutes the student population in various schools across the state
A Comparison Study on the Effect of Two Teaching Methods of Brainstorming and Group Discussion by E-Learning on Learning Level and Interest in Teamwork in Social Studies Course(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزه های تخصصی:
Purpose: Since the prevalence of Covid-19 increased the use of e-learning and its dual importance in teaching methods, this study aimed to compare the effect of two teaching methods of brainstorming and group discussion by e-learning on learning level and interest in teamwork in social studies course. Methodology: This was an applied study in terms of purpose and semi-experimental with pre-test and post-test design in terms of implementation method. The study population was the third-grade elementary school students in district 20 of Tehran in the academic year of 2020-2021. The sample size was 60 students in two classes with 30 ones who were selected by available sampling method. One of the classes was considered as a teaching group with brainstorming method in a random way and the other class was considered as a teaching group with group discussion method. The teacher-made test of learning level in the social studies course and the teamwork interest questionnaire (Evans & Jarvis, 1986) were used to collect the data. Findings: The results of paired t-test showed that both methods of teaching brainstorming and group discussion by e-learning enhanced the level of learning and interest in teamwork in social studies course (P <0.001). The results of univariate analysis of covariance showed that the group discussion teaching method in comparison with the brainstorming teaching method enhanced the learning level and interest in teamwork in the social studies course (P <0.001). Conclusion: The results showed the effectiveness of both methods and the greater impact of group discussion teaching method compared to the brainstorming teaching method in both variables of learning level and interest in teamwork. Therefore, the use of group discussion teaching method should be prioritized to improve academic performance in social studies course.

The statistical population includes middle school and high school teachers in the city of Dehloran during the 2020-2021 school year. The sample size was determined 18 people based on the principle of theoretical saturation and purposive sampling was used. The study was conducted through semi-constructed interviews and data analysis was done based on thematic analysis. The credibility of the findings was assessed using face validity (Five academic experts including two sociology professors, one psychology professor, and two curriculum design professors) and Cohen’s kappa agreement coefficient was used for reliability, for which a value of 0.88 was obtained. Findings : Findings show that 23 open codes and 7 axial codes (a globalized approach, parents’ experiences, the lower psychological and economic cost of virtual teaching, the constant nature of virtual teaching, the adaptability of pillars of the education system, a selective teaching method, and teachers’ social status) were identified as opportunities of virtual teaching. Also, 24 open codes and 8 axial codes (infrastructural factors, economic challenges, ambiguity about roles, lack of technological skills, lost motivation in teachers and students, the risk of teaching, and teachers’ competencies) were identified as challenges of virtual education during the pandemic. Conclusion : Given the uncertainty of when the pandemic will be completely done with, the continuation of virtual teaching is necessary and those in charge of education must seriously pay attention to the present challenges to improve its quality.
