The Effect of Watching English Cartoons on Adolescent Iranian EFL Learners’ Emotion Regulation and Self-Efficacy(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

English cartoons have become increasingly popular as a resource for language learners worldwide. While the literature has primarily focused on their impact on English language skills and sub-skills in EFL education, less attention has been given to their influence on cognitive and affective aspects such as emotion regulation and self-efficacy. This study employed a mixed-methods approach with a pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental design to explore the impact of watching English cartoons on the emotion regulation and self-efficacy of adolescent Iranian EFL learners. 120 Iranian learners, aged 12 to 18, were recruited from English institutes in Tehran and randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. The experimental group watched two 30-minute episodes of selected American-produced animated cartoons per week for eight weeks, totaling 16 episodes, while the control group did not. The MANCOVA analysis revealed significant differences in self-efficacy and emotion regulation between the experimental and control groups, indicating that exposure to English cartoons positively influences learners' emotional responses and self-efficacy. Thematic analysis of the interview data highlighted positive evaluations of the experience, identifying five themes: enhancement of language skills, positive emotions leading to increased motivation, the prominence of comedy, contribution to sustained learning, and varying effects on self-efficacy. These findings hold valuable theoretical and practical implications for the field.

The Effect of Explicit Pragmatic Instruction on EFL Students' Production of Speech Acts: Pragmalinguistic vs. Sociopragmatic Errors in Focus(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

L2 learners' pragmatic development could be manifested by their proper speech act production. Due to the existing differences among languages, errors in speech act realization are inevitable. Employing well-established teaching methods could help L2 learners overcome their problems in speech act production. This endeavor aimed to explore the effects of explicit metapragmatic instruction on Iraqi EFL learners' use of English requests, apologies, and refusals examining the possible intervening role of error type and gender. The study sample comprised 80 English major B.A. students at Al-Kufa University, Iraq. Within six online sessions, the EG received instruction through direct awareness raising and being provided with metapragmatic information. Data analyses indicated that explicit pragmatic instruction significantly improved the students' speech act realization. Additionally, while the female learners benefitted more from the intervention and a higher percentage of sociopragmatic, compared to pragmalinguistic, errors were amended after the treatment, the variables of gender and pragmatic error types did not have significant intervening effects. The findings imply that developing pragmatic competence via direct pragmatic intervention and metapragmatic knowledge awareness needs to receive much attention on the part of Iraqi language instructors, materials developers, and curriculum designers, as it could greatly help learners avoid pragmatic failures.

Construction of Intercultural Savoirs Through Interculturally-laden Tasks: An Iranian Experience(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

A long-standing concern reverberating over the minds of intercultural scholars is how best to incorporate intercultural issues in English language teaching, an issue on which there has been little research in EFL contexts. To fill this gap, this qualitative study examined the efficacy of interculturally-laden tasks in promoting Iranian learners’ intercultural competency in Anzali, Guilan province, Iran. Thus, a group of 22 Iranian intermediate EFL learners were recruited through convenience sampling from a pool of 44 according to their score on Oxford Quick Placement Test. All the participants were 12 females and 10 males aged 21-30. Then, they attended eighteen sessions of intercultural training using Mirrors and Windows: An intercultural communication textbook and completed seven intercultural tasks as a pretest and posttest. Data was collected through seven intercultural tasks and reflective worksheets. Drawing on the qualitative content analysis of intercultural tasks, the findings revealed that the tasks could help the participants increase their intercultural competence. Moreover, three themes were emerged from the analysis of the reflective worksheets as follow: (1) the participants’ evaluation of the ICC course and intercultural tasks, (2) perceptions regarding intercultural development and (3) language skills and anxiety. The implications and suggestions for further research are discussed.

Promoting EFL Learners’ Writing Skills via Reflection: The Case of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

Writing skill is a challenging and frequently-used activity in academic circles. This study investigated the effects of reflective writing on EFL learners’ writing performance. The participants were 61 Iranian EFL learners from two intact university classes randomly assigned to the non-reflective (n=31) and reflective (n=30) groups. Over sixteen sessions of instructions over eight weeks, the non-reflective group was taught using the traditional writing method; however, the reflective group was exposed to reflective writing instruction under Kolb’s Model. The data were collected through reflective writing compositions and the content analysis of think-aloud protocols. The quantitative data analysis revealed that the reflective group significantly outperformed the non-reflective group in writing compositions. The thematic analysis of think-aloud protocols substantiated the quantitative data findings, indicating that all participants went through the cognitive psychological processes of ‘planning, drafting, pausing and thinking, reading and reproducing, reviewing, editing and revising’ as they were engaged in reflective writing via Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle. The results offer significant implications for language instructors, curriculum planners, and course designers.

The Role of Direct Metalinguistic and Indirect Feedback Timing in Enhancing Willingness to Communicate (WTC) of Iranian EFL Learners(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

This study tried to inspect and compare any possible effects of immediate and delayed metalinguistic and indirect feedback on the level of WTC of Iranian EFL learners in task performance. This research was a quasi-experimental work with 120 Participants (63 males and 57 females) who were divided into four groups: 30 students as the direct-immediate feedback group, 30 students as the direct-delayed feedback, 30 students as the indirect-immediate feedback, and 30 students as the indirect-delayed feedback. Different instruments were utilized to collect the required data, including the Oxford Placement Test (OPT), the WTC scale (McCroskey, 1992), and a set of two-way exchange tasks. After homogenizing the participants, based on the OPT test, the participants took the WTC scale as a pretest. As the treatment, the indirect immediate feedback group participants reformulated the errors into the correct form as soon as they committed errors. In the indirect delayed feedback group, the teacher noted the errors and the student’s name to provide feedback for that specific student. In the direct metalinguistic immediate feedback group, the participants were provided with both explanations and examples of the correct form of errors they committed. In the metalinguistic delayed group, the teacher wrote notes on the error types and the students’ names to provide explanations andcorrect examples for specific students. The WTC scale was readministered in the post-test and the scores were recorded. Two-way ANOVA was used to analyze the pre-and post-test data. The result of the data analysis showed there was an interaction between the timing and the type of feedback regarding their effect on Iranian intermediate EFL learners’ WTC.

The Effect of Iranian EFL Teachers’ Self-Regulation and Emotional Labor on Their Reflective Action in EFL Online Classes(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

This study sought to determine the impact of self-regulation and emotional labor on reflective action among Iranian EFL teachers in online EFL classes using structural equation modeling. To achieve this, a combination of cluster sampling and stratified random sampling of 500 people was recruited. The participants were administered with the English version of Dutch questionnaire of emotional labor, Teacher Self-Regulation Scale and Teaching Reflection Inventory. After collecting data using three distinct questionnaires pertaining to latent variables, SEM analysis was conducted using IMB SPSS version 28.0 and Amos version 24.0 to analyze the path model relationships. To this end, a hypnotical model was proposed, evaluated, and specified to fit the data. The confirmatory factor analysis was employed to assess the hypothetical model by employing goodness of fit indices and analyzing all the convergences between the latent variables and the related sub-scales. According to the criteria for a good model's fitness, all of the model's values are above 0.90, indicating that the model has good fitness. And it was concluded that there was statistically significant relationships between the variables of the study.

Mediate Learning Experience (MLE) posits that the quality and amount of mediated learning interactions undergone by a learner affects both his cognitive and psychological development and his functioning as an autonomous and independent learner. This study attempts to implement MLE theory in pedagogy by designing an MLE-based grammar lesson plan in respect of present continuous through operationalizing and activating MLE parameters in a grammar class. Through the application of MLE in pedagogy, not only do the teachers take on new roles like mediating lifelong learning and mentoring fellow teachers but also the learners experience innovative functions such as developing heuristics for solving problems and autonomous learning and thinking essential to the late modern knowledge-based era. Lexical Chains of Sermons No. 87 and 191 of Nahj al-Balaghah and their role in understanding the theme(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

"Lexical Chains" is one of the newest branches of statistical semantics, which is defiend as the process of identifying words that have semantic relationship with each other, and help us to identify the topic and main content of the text. In this research, we aim to determine lexical chains of sermons No. 87 and 191 of Nahj al-Balaghah, based on the theory of "Saxena", as well as "Barzilay" and "Elhadad", using the descriptive-analytical and statistical method. The results show that in both sermons, the semantic relation "Antonym" has the most frequency. In sermons No. 87 and 191, respectively, 8% and 5% of the chains are "strong chains", and play the main role in determining the main themes of the sermons. According to the data, choosing the title "religious, ethical, scientific" for the sermon No. 87, and "moral, ethical, social, intellectual" for the sermon No. 191 -contrary to what "Mohammad Dashti" mentioned for them- seems more appropriate.

A Study on Iranian High School Students’ Perception of Cheating in Online Assessments(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic has forced many educational institutions worldwide to move from in-person to online classes. Although online technologies do facilitate learning and testing, academic dishonesty in online assessments (OAs) remains an issue of concern since technological devices provide students with ample opportunities to cheat in exams. The purpose of this study was to investigate Iranian high school students' perceptions of cheating in OAs. In addition, the study tried to examine the potential differences between male and female students’ perceptions of cheating in OAs. The participants were 214 Iranian high school students. They were asked to answer a questionnaire about academic dishonesty in OAs. The results indicated that more than 80% of the participants had experienced cheating in OAs. “Looking at the teaching materials and copying answers” was mentioned as the most frequent method of cheating. The main reason for cheating was “getting a better score”, and the main reason for not cheating was “being morally and socially unacceptable”. In addition, almost 70% of the participants did not have a negative attitude to cheating in OAs. Furthermore, there was not any significant difference between male and female students' perceptions of cheating (Sig.>.05).

Self-Reflection Training: An Investigation of Iranian In-Service EFL Teachers’ Belief and Performance Development(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

This study aims to investigate the effect of implementing self-reflection training on Iranian in-service EFL teachers’ beliefs and performance development. From all available participants teaching at the International College of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, 20 in-service EFL teachers were involved in this study. The teacher’s belief questionnaire, observation checklist, and Skype app were used as the instruments to collect data. Before the training phase, the pre-tests, i.e., observation checklist and teacher’s belief questionnaire, were used for all the participants. The researchers utilized Skype App to instruct the participants in an online setting. During the training phase, participants were exposed to self-reflection practice. The instruction was done in 16 sessions twice a week for two months. After the training phase, the post-tests were run, i.e., the observation checklist and teachers’ belief questionnaire. The data analysis revealed that implementing the principles of self-reflective instruction had a statistically significant effect on Iranian in-service EFL teachers’ beliefs about their teaching practice efficacy and teaching performance development. This study has some implications that may help language teacher educators, English instructors, EFL/ESL learners, students, language curriculum program policymakers, and educational syllabus designers.

Applying Structural Equation Modeling to Second-language (L2) Research: Key Concepts and Fundamental Reconsiderations(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

As conceptual models of language learning, use, and processing mature, it is both natural and necessary for the statistical models we apply to follow suit. One statistical approach with great potential in the field Applied Linguistics and L2 studies is structural equation modeling (SEM). SEM is introduced in this paper as a powerful and highly flexible family of analyses. In doing so, the paper outlines (a) the types of variables and possible modeled relationships that SEM is equipped to address and (b) statistical considerations for applying SEM in L2 research, and (c) a number of additional and key considerations for those interested in delving deeper into SEM (e.g., goodness of fit indices, model modification procedures, etc.). This paper also describes the potential of SEM to contribute to construct validation (e.g., convergent and discriminant validity). Throughout the paper, a plethora of examples pertaining to applications of SEM in L2 research are provided.

Les enjeux du choix de l'Arménie comme le pays de passage des voyageurs français vers la Perse(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Au cours de l'histoire, notamment du XVIe jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle, lorsque le voyage des Européens, des prêtres aux écrivains et commerçants, vers la Perse, a connu une forte croissance, l’Arménie a trouvé également une place dans l’itinéraire de ces voyageurs . Toutefois, le nombre des Français passant par l’Arménie ne paraît point significatif par rapport au nombre total des voyageurs européens qui arrivaient en Iran. Cet article se propose d'examiner la place de l'Arménie, à cette période, dans le choix de l’itinéraire entre l'Iran et l'Europe par les voyageurs français, et de répondre à la question suivante : pourquoi les Français ont rarement choisi cette route pour rejoindre l'Iran ? Il semble que plusieurs facteurs fondamentaux aient joué un rôle dans ce domaine. Outre la situation géographique de l'Arménie, ainsi que le rôle de l’Empire Ottoman veillant à maintenir sa position de supériorité dans la région et de contrôler l'afflux de touristes vers la Perse, le rôle de l'Église arménienne paraît déterminant. L’Arménie souhaitait en effet rester à l'écart de la concurrence des voisins puissants de l'Iran, à savoir la Russie et l’Empire ottoman, et d'autre part, elle voyait les objectifs religieux des Européens en conflit avec les siens.

Résumé : En cette ère inédite du XXIème siècle, marquée et envahie par une mondialisation agissante et omniprésente, le statut de l’individu, de son identité et de sa culture sont des composantes majeures à repenser en matière de sciences humaines et plus particulièrement, en didactique des langues-cultures. Chose qui, par intransigeance, nous amène à examiner de près, les différentes approches culturelles/identitaires que chaque sujet-lecteur manifeste distinctement en classe d’enseignement-apprentissage du FLE ; lieu par excellence où, le texte littéraire est fortement exploité. De ce fait, à travers cette étude, nous allons mettre en relief une compétence culturelle nouvelle qui, singulière, se formule chez nos sujets-lecteurs-mondialisés –citoyens du monde– que nous qualifierons de « compétence transculturelle ». De surcroît, réalisée dans divers champs culturels, notre travail de recherche a comme principale visée d’observer cette composante culturelle contingente qui se déploie formellement dans nos classes et que, jusqu’à présent, les textes officiels n’ont pas su mettre en exergue.

مطالعه جغرافیای تاریخی داستان رفتن بهرام گور به نخجیرگاه در شاهنامه فردوسی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

داستان رفتن بهرام گور به نخجیرگاه در شاهنامه فردوسی، یکی از داستان های مرتبط با شخصیت بهرام گور است که موقعیت جغرافیایی آن تاکنون به طور دقیق شناسایی نشده است. این پژوهش با هدف پاسخ به این سوال که: جغرافیای تاریخی این داستان بر اساس اسناد و مدارک مکتوب در کجا قرار دارد؟ انجام شده است. برای دستیابی به این هدف، از روش توصیفی تحلیلی و رویکرد تطبیقی استفاده شده است. داده های تاریخی و ادبی با شواهد جغرافیایی و میدانی مقایسه شده اند. نتایج تحقیق نشان می دهند که مکان هایی چون «برقوه» با شهر ابرقوه در استان یزد هم خوانی دارد و «جز» با منطقه جزستان در بزدیکی ابرقوه منطبق است. علاوه بر این، شواهد میدانی حاکی از آن است که نخجیرگاه بهرام گور در محدوده ای میان کاسه رود و کوه های مرزی ابرقوه و آباده قرار داشته است. این یافته ها با شواهد باستان شناسی، از جمله رباط شاه نشین و تل قصر بهرام، همخونی دارد. پژوهش حاضر تصویری دقیق از جغرافیای تاریخی این داستان ارائه می دهد و می تواند مبنای پژوهش های آینده در این حوزه باشد.

نگاهی به ریشه های آیین کهن «نری گله» در ندوشن(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

رها کردن بزهای نر را در گله به منظور جفت گیری «نری گله» می گویند. از گذشته، در ندوشن (شهری در شهرستان میبد، غرب استان یزد)، این کار برای گله ها در روز بیست و پنجم مهرماه و با انجام مراسمی خاص شبیه یک جشن صورت می گرفته است. منظور از انجام پژوهش، پیدا کردن ریشه های کهن این آیین است. شیوه پژوهش توصیفی-تحلیلی بوده و اطلاعات مورد نیاز این پژوهش از مطالعات کتابخانه ای گردآوری شده است. کاربرد میوه انار (نماد باروری در فرهنگ های مختلف) در مراسم نری گله، نشان از اهمیت نتایج این مراسم برای برگزارکنندگانش دارد. روز انجام نری گله در بازه زمانی مناسب از لحاظ طبیعی و زیستی قرار دارد. همچنین روزی است (روز اورمزد از ماه آبان در گاهشمار زردشتی) که از  نظر زردشتیان آغاز آفرینش چهارپایان سودمند از جمله گوسفند است. نری گله با گهنبار ایاسرم همزمان است که زمان بازگشت گله و جفت گیری گوسفندان معنی می شود. نری گله را می توان با گشن گیری (گشن گذاری) در ادبیات مکتوب زردشتی همسان دانست. از نظر ارداویراف نامه یکی از وظایف شبانان، گشن گیری به قاعده گوسفندان بوده است. شیوه اجرا و زمان برگزاری مراسم نری گله در ندوشن نشان می دهد که مراسم نری گله، آیین بسیار کهنی است.

Developing Process Writing Ability in Virtual Learning Environment via (Reinforced) Metalinguistic Corrective Feedback(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

The current study was performed to investigate the impact of metalinguistic oral and written corrective feedback on learners’ process writing ability through virtual learning environment. To this aim, a total of 66 Iranian EFL students in Shahrekord University participated in the study. To conduct the study, a sample of IELTS expository writing (Writing Task 1) was administered to all participants for homogeneity purposes. Then, each of the two classes was divided into two parts, and each was randomly assigned to one of the four comparison groups (oral metalinguistic feedback, written metalinguistic feedback, oral metalinguistic + error logs, and written metalinguistic + error logs). Next, the writing pretest (a process writing task) was given to participants prior to instruction. The treatment lasted for eight weeks, and then process writing posttest was administered. The results revealed that all groups made progress from pretest to posttest. However, no significant difference was found among the four types of metalinguistic corrective feedback. The implications of the findings are discussed throughout the paper.

Designing and Validating a Critical Pedagogy-Based Teacher Effectiveness Scale for Iranian EFL Teachers(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

One of the significant factors in EFL learning is teacher effectiveness which is of high importance since teachers are really and directly engaged in language learning as the final aim of English classes. This study aimed at designing and validating a Critical Pedagogy-Based Teacher Effectiveness Scale for Iranian EFL teachers. In so doing, an exploratory mixed-methods design was used. The participants of the qualitative phase included 20 male and female Iranian English teachers who were selected through available sampling. In the quantitative phase, 200 male and female Iranian English teachers participated through available sampling. To collect the data, a semi-structured interview was used. To analyze the data, qualitative thematic analysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Cronbach’s Alpha Test were used. According to the results, the Critical Pedagogy-Based Teacher Effectiveness Scale for Iranian EFL teachers was developed in 42 Likert items in three sub-scales including pedagogical effectiveness (items 1 to 23), socio-cultural effectiveness (items 24 to 33), and empowering effectiveness (items 34 to 42). Six items were omitted in EFA and 36 items remained in the final scale. It was designed in a four-point Likert range from 1= strongly disagree to 4= strongly agree. It was shown that the developed scale is valid and reliable. The findings have some implications for EFL teachers, learners, teacher education instructors and policy makers

Predicting Technology Use in EFL Instruction: The Roles of Teacher Self-Efficacy and Technology Self-Efficacy(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

With the widespread use of technology in today's society, the effective integration of technology in education has become a vital area of research, particularly in teacher education. Teacher variables play a crucial role in the successful incorporation of technology in the classroom. Consequently, several empirical studies have explored the factors influencing teachers' intentions to use technology. This study aims to contribute to this research by examining the roles of teacher self-efficacy and technology self-efficacy in predicting technology use among Iranian EFL instructors. A sample of 353 Iranian EFL instructors participated in an online survey, completing three self-report scales measuring the mentioned constructs. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the collected data and test the relationships between the variables. The findings indicated that teacher technology self-efficacy had a more significant impact on intentions to use technology compared to teacher self-efficacy. Both predictor variables, however, showed unique effects on intentions to use technology. The paper concludes with practical implications and recommendations for further research.

یکی از مهم ترین گونه های ادبی که از ایران باستان، به ویژه از دوره میانه ادبیات ایرانی باقی مانده است، اندرزنامه ها است. تعداد زیاد اندرزنامه ها، که در زبان فارسی و عربی باقی مانده است، گواهی می دهد، این نوع از ادبیات در دوره باستانی و میانه ایران، رواج و مجبوبیت بسیار داشته است. شیوه نگارش اندرزنامه ها در زبان فارسی معمولاً از سبکی ساده و روان با جملاتی کوتاه و روشن پیروی می کند. پیشینه اندرزنامه نویسی در دوره باستانی و میانه ایران نیز همین شیوه و سبک را نشان می دهد. متن اندرزنامه های پهلوی معمولاً بیش از چند صفحه نیست و سبک آنها اغلب ساده و روان است. جملات کوتاه اندرزی، گاه به صورت جملات خبری و گاه مانند مینوی خرد، یادگار بزرگمهر و اندرز اوشنر دانا به صورت پرسش و پاسخ بیان شده اند. اندرزهای منسوب به انوشیروان در متون فارسی و عربی نیز اغلب همین گونه اند، یعنی با جملاتی کوتاه و با نثری ساده نوشته شده اند؛ اما همیشه نیز اینگونه نیست. گاهی اندرزنامه ها را با سبکی دشوار و نثری مسجع نوشته اند. در زبان فارسی بازنویسی اندرزها به شعر نیز بسیار رایج بوده که در مورد اندرزهای انوشیروان بجز شاهنامه می توان به پندنامه انوشیروان در دیوان ابن یمین اشاره کرد. هدف این پژوهش بررسی منابع اندرزی خسرو انوشیروان، تقسیم بندی و مقایسه آنها با یکدیگر است.

مقایسه زبان و موسیقی از دیدگاه عصب- روان شناسی زبان

در مقاله حاضر قصد بر آن است تا موسیقی و زبان به عنوان نظام های شناختی بررسی شود. مقایسه این دو نظام به لحاظ پیچیدگی های آن حائز اهمیت است و به شناخت چگونگی عملکرد مغز و ذهن کمک می کند. علاوه بر این، مطالعه مقایسه ای می تواند به عنوان نوعی آزمون جهت ارزیابی نظریه های مربوط به چگونگی عملکرد ذهن و در نهایت عملکرد مغز عمل کند و در نتیجه، به لحاظ کاربردی، به حل مسائل آموزش و درمان کمک نماید. در مقاله حاضر، ابتدا تعریف نظام های زبان و موسیقی ارائه، سپس دو نظام مذکور بر پایه ملاحظات روان شناختی و آنگاه بر اساس پایه های عصب شناختی مقایسه می شوند. در این بررسی، دو نظام زبان و موسیقی از نظر روان شناسی زبان به لحاظ پردازش (درک و یادگیری)، پدیده ادراک مقوله ای، مراحل فراگیری و رشد، پردازش اطلاعات، عملکرد حافظه، سطوح پردازش و نظام های نوشتاری بررسی و مقایسه می شوند. از نظر ملاحظات عصب شناختی نیز دو نظام با توجه به مسیرهای پردازشی عصب شناختی، مناطق پردازش و سازمان دهی در مغز  و اختلالات مربوط به دو حوزه بررسی می شوند. نتایج این بررسی با در نظر گرفتن ملاحظات روان شناختی و عصب شناختی، نشانگر آن است که دو نظام دارای تفاوت ها و به ویژه شباهت هایی هستند که به لحاظ عملکرد کلی پردازشی و شناختی ذهن و همچنین، عملکرد عصب شناختی و سازمان دهی آن می تواند راه گشایی جهت روشن شدن مسائل مربوط به چگونگی عملکرد شناختی انسان باشد.
