ملاحظاتی در ترتیب خطی ساخت فعل فارسی از دیدگاه پادتقارنی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

این نوشتار می کوشد نشان دهد که تبیین ترتیب خطی در ساخت فعل فارسی از منظری پاد تقارنی و بدون توسل به پارامترهای متناقض جهت هسته امکان پذیر است. چارچوب نظری این بحث اصولاً مفهوم پارامترِ جهت هسته را در زبان های طبیعی رد می کند و در عوض، تمام ترتیب ها را مشتق از ترتیب پایه مشخص گر- هسته - متمم می داند. هر ترتیب دیگری جز این لاجرم مشتق است و از حرکت سازه های نحوی به دست می آید. فارسی هم ویژگی های ترتیب آزاد را نشان می دهد و هم در بسیاری مقوله ها، ترتیب های ثابت دارد. تبیین های خطی فارسی در چارچوب های پارامتری دچار مشکل تناقض یا ناهمسانی در انتخاب ارزش پارامتر می شوند، به طوری که مقوله هایی مانند متمم ساز و حرف اضافه را با کمک یک ارزش پارامتری و مقوله هایی همچون فعل و اسم را با ارزش دیگری تبیین می نمایند.در این جا نشان داده می شود که دیدگاه غیر پارامتری پادتقارنی بدون کم ترین مشکلی ویژگی های خطی پوسته فعلی فارسی را توضیح می دهد. از رهگذر این کاوش، برخی جبنه های صرفی و معناشناختی ساخت های مذکور نیز توجیه نظام مندی پیدا می کند.

Cultivating Responses from Students through Literature Circle

The English literature component has been around in the Malaysian Education system since 2000. However, literature as a subject has always been learned more for transactional purposes rather than for its aesthetic value. Basically, a regurgitation of knowledge from years of learning, poured out in one major examination. In this research, the researcher applies a teaching method, called the literature circle in a classroom to study how it could be an effective way to learning literature beyond the classroom and for completing exam papers. Accompanying the literature circle activity is the writing of personal responses to gauge the students’ understanding and views on the literature component being studied. This paper discusses the findings of the study that investigates the effect of literature circle in the students’ personal responses and also to examine the students’ perception towards literature circle. The findings of this study, obtained via qualitative and quantitative instruments, comprising of observations, interviews, personal responses, and questionnaires, provide insights for educators and other researchers into another dimension of the teaching and learning of literature component.

The Contribution of Lexical, Grammatical, and Propositional Knowledge Preparation to L2 Listening Comprehension(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Listening comprehension is a multifaceted L2 skill and its actual mastery has proved challenging for many EFL learners (Matthews, 2018). Pre-listening supports may help us change the dire situation in developing effective listening competence. Therefore, the current study tried to examine the effect of vocabulary preparation, grammar instruction and background knowledge activation as pre-listening tasks on the listening comprehension among 95 Iranian intermediate EFL learners in three experimental groups who were randomly selected from among 142 Iranian EFL learners after administration of a paper-based TOEFL. In group A, the teacher elaborated on the difficult grammatical structures of the listening comprehension (LC) test and the students did some exercises. Group B practiced related difficult words using synonyms, antonyms, and sentence examples. In group C, some topical knowledge about the content of the LC test was given and discussed. After the treatment, a valid researcher-made LC test was given to all groups. This procedure was followed for four more listening texts and after each treatment, a valid researcher-made LC test based on the text was administered. Data analysis using one-way ANOVA and Scheffe test revealed that background knowledge activation and vocabulary preparation significantly improved learners’ listening performances; however, grammar preparation did not exert a significant influence on EFL listening comprehension. These results were confirmed by the experts’ attitudes in the subsequent qualitative phase of the study. These findings suggest that EFL teachers should use background knowledge activation and lexical preparation prior to the main listening tasks.

An Investigation of Iranians and International English Students'Attitudes towards Intercultural Communicative Competence(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

The present study aimed to investigate the attitudes and perceived nature of thinking and understanding towards intercultural communicative competence (ICC) among International English major students. Accordingly, this study employed the paradigm of a sequential mixed-method research, in which it comprised a qualitative phase followed by a quantitative phase. The participants of the first phase of the study were 30 undergraduate English major students in their third year at Isfahan Islamic Azad University in Iran; and the participants of the second phase of the study included 30 international ESL students in their first year at Gonzaga University (GU), in Washington, U.S. The analysis of narratives in the first phase of the study indicated that the participants had diverse attitudes towards intercultural encounters. The results of the statistical analyses of the second phase of the study showed that the most important individual difference variables directly influencing students’ intercultural communicative competence were their communication apprehension and their perceived communicative competence. This study also showed that students’ self-image as communicators were of utmost importance: if students believe they are good communicators in English, theyare more likely to be self-confident and are more likely to take part in intercultural encounters. Thus, instructors should help students achieve a realistic self-image about their performance in English and support them if they lack self-confidence.

معرفی کتاب خودترجمۀ ادبی: دورنماهای نظری

در این مقاله به معرفی و بررسی کتاب خودترجمۀ ادبی: دورنماهای نظری پرداخته می شود که دربرگیرندۀ ده مقالۀ ارائه شده در همایشی به همین نام می باشد که در سال 2012 در دانشگاه اودین ایتالیا برگزار شده است. خودترجمه به عنوان «ترجمه ای که یک نویسنده از اثر خود به زبان دیگر ارائه می کند» تعریف شده است. این کتاب شامل دو بخش است که به ترتیب با رویکردهای بیرونی (عوامل تاریخی، اجتماعی و ...) و رویکردهای درونی (که متن و مؤلف را در مرکز مطالعه قرار می دهند) به بررسی جنبه های مختلف خودترجمۀ ادبی می پردازند.

Washback Effect of TEFL MA Exam on Iranian Lecturers’ Classroom Activities(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Washback refers to the effect of testing on teaching and learning. The university entrance exam for Iranian MA candidates of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (hereinafter TEFL MA UEE) is a nationwide high-stakes test administered every year, and significant decisions will be made based on the examinees’ performance on this exam; therefore, it is prone to bring about degrees of washback at the micro and macro levels. This study was an attempt to examine the washback effect of TEFL MA UEE on Iranian lecturers’ classroom activities. Therefore, a mixed-method approach was used to collect, analyze, and integrate both quantitative and qualitative data in order to obtain a better grasp of the research topic and to enhance validity and reliability of the information. Based on a sequential design, two phases of data collection were conducted with a two-week interval. In the first phase, a valid and reliable researcher-made questionnaire was administered to a sample of 16 Iranian university lecturers. In the second phase, five lecturers agreed to be interviewed. For this purpose, an interview protocol was developed and it was checked for the validity and reliability. The findings showed that TEFL MA UEE did not induce a high level of washback on the lecturers’ classroom activities and their teaching methodology. The findings could have practical implications for TEFL MA UEE constructors and policymakers in Iran and could also be of use to the researchers in the field of washback studies by providing some guidelines for this complicated phenomenon.

An Exploration of Practices Adopted by EFL Teachers for Learners with Low-Incidence Disabilities in Inclusive Classes(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

English language is arguably one of the life prerequisites in this information era and more individuals around the world than ever before are involved in learning English language as an international language of education and business. Learners with disabilities are not excluded from this mainstream; however, they face barriers in learning English. As such, we aimed in this phenomenological multiple case study, underpinned by the social constructivist view of disability, to identify factors affecting EFL teachers’ inclusive practices provided for learners with low-incidence disabilities and reveal the compatibility of such practices with Vygotsky’s social constructivism. To this end, four inclusive classes were observed for 48 sessions (12 sessions per class) and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 45 EFL teachers. We used the data collected from observation notes and interview transcripts to extract major themes describing factors affecting such practices in EFL settings. Drawing on the collected data, we plotted a conceptual framework, and then examined the compatibility of the inclusive practices adopted by the EFL teachers with Vygotsky’s social constructivist theory. We concluded with a discussion on the study's implications and recommendations for practitioners.

Citation Behaviours of Applied Linguists in Discussion Sections of Research Articles(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

It is now generally accepted that academic writing is a social activity by which the authors negotiate with their audience to gain community acceptance for their findings. One of the ways to achieve such an acceptance is by establishing intertextual links to prior research using citation. Despite a vast research on the topic and suggestion of typologies for the form and function of citation in academic writing, few studies have focused on the rhetorical functions of citations. Using Swales' (1990) and Samraj’s (2013) typologies and analyzing 45 research articles from five high impact factor journals in the field of Applied Linguistics, this paper aims to identity the forms and rhetorical functions of citations in the Discussion sections of these articles. The analysis of the forms shows an overwhelming tendency towards using non-integral citations. Studying the functions of citations indicates that citations are used with various rhetorical functions: to compare the findings; support the explanations; to support the interpretations; and to support the recommendations. It is concluded that by referring to literature, applied linguists contextualize their propositions and try to use it as a support for their research claims in order to persuade their audience of their research outcomes soundness. The findings can enhance our understanding of the reasons behind choosing citations in various parts of discussion section and can be turned into pedagogical materials and raise rhetorical consciousness through teaching those choices explicitly to ESL students

شکایت از رأی مدنی در خلال مهلت طریقه شکایت دیگر و مقوله اسقاط حق شکایت(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

ممکن است شخصی حق داشته باشد از یک رأی به چند طریق شکایت کند. این طرق شکایت عادی و فوق العاده طی اصولی در کنار یا به دنبال هم هستند. اسقاط این حق شکایت بر اساس اصول شناخته شده دادرسی میسر است. اما، درباره نحوه و هنگامه اسقاط و برخورد آن با صلاحیت و اختیار توصیف دادگاه مرجوع الیه در تفسیر قوانین نزد دکترین و رویه دادگاه ها اختلاف هایی وجود دارد. برخی آن را ضمناً قابل اسقاط می دانند، برخی شعب فقط به اسقاط صریح ترتیب اثر می دهند، و بعضی شعب دیوان عالی کشور نیز هیچ یک را قابل پذیرش نمی دانند. در این پژوهش بحث ها و استدلال های دکترین و رویه قضایی تحلیل می شود. به باور نگارنده حق شکایت از رأی حقی از حقوق شخصی آیینی و قابل اسقاط است. اما، به منظور اجتناب از بروز ابهام در اعمال آیین دادرسی، اسقاط الزاماً باید صریح باشد و اعمال یک طریقه شکایت در مهلت طریقه شکایت دیگر اسقاط ضمنی حق آن طریقه نیست. تحلیل رابطه میان انواع طرق شکایت از رأی در تبیین مواضع دادگاه ها و رسیدن به نظریه مقبول که با ماهیت دادرسی مدنی هم سو باشد اهمیت دارد.

Iranian EFL Teachers’ Sense-Making of Policy Reforms: The Case of the New Communicative-Based Curriculum(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

By the end of the 2020s, a change involving the substitution of the Communicative Approach to English teaching for the Structural one has been fully operative in the Iranian secondary education system. This study set out to explore the views of Iranian teachers vis-a-vis the changes introduced into the education policy of the nation since teachers as end-point policy workers play a pivotal role in the ultimate success or failure of any curricular activity. Using data from semi-structured interviews and follow-up procedures, the investigation sought to delve into how eighteen EFL teachers at the upper secondary education level made sense of changes effected at the intersection of policy and practice. Common patterns and themes were identified and presented at the level of data analysis. Despite embracing the changes, the results showed that the teachers sensed that they had been left to their own devices in translating policy into practice and that the proposed reforms were not all-inclusive in the sense that significant stakeholders including parents, school counselors, and educational leaders had been left out. They were further keenly aware of a number of obstacles in the way of policy enactment and found especially the prevalence of a regime of cramming for tests leading to the dominance of a negative teach-to-the-test culture, limited support available and infrastructural challenges, as well as resistance to change among structurally-minded practitioners as highly detrimental to implementation of change. Implications for policy, practice, and research are finally given.

Investigation of the Strategies Employed in Translation of Cultural and Ideological Items from English into Farsi in the Process of Dubbing (Based on Sharifi and Darchinyan’s Categorization)

At the age of globalization and the dominance of media, the audiovisual translation is no more considered as a marginal area and plays an important role in bringing cultures closer to each other. While taboo terms are an inseparable part of American movies, the movie maker companies have to reflect the authenticity of their language in audiovisual products in order to make them more tangible for their audiences. However, one of the biggest concerns of Iranian official audiovisual translators is cultural and ideological items such as taboo terms in audiovisual products. One of the aims of the present study was to investigate the strategies applied in the translation of taboo terms in two dubbed American movies by Iranian official audiovisual translators. The results indicated that most of the taboo terms have been altered or deleted ideologically during the process of translation due to the cultural differences between the source and the target culture. Finally, Iranian official audiovisual translators attempted to tone down the strong language, offensive expressions, vulgar descriptions, etc. in the process of dubbing and create an acceptable translation for their audiences.

Investigating English Teachers' Awareness of Pedagogical Competence and its Effect on Students' Language Learning(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

The study examined the impact of high school English teachers’ awareness of pedagogical competence on student learning. A psychometric measurement instrument of English language teachers' pedagogical competence (ELTPC) was first developed through factor analysis with 320 high school teachers in Guilan, Northern Iran. Based on the developed instrument, 36 teachers were divided into two groups of aware and unaware teachers of pedagogical competence (PC) according to Contrasting Groups Method of cut score. Then, 160 high school third graders received instruction from the aware and unaware teachers for 7 weeks. Finally, a survey regarding the teachers’ implementation of pedagogical competence in classrooms was conducted with 30 students. The findings from the experiment and survey supported the teachers in aware group. Although, based on the survey results, the aware teachers were reported to act better, they were not reported as highly practicing the pedagogical competence. The findings can be practically used by schools, education administration, and teacher educators.

زبانشناسان خارجی تحت عنوان سنتی «تطابق زمان دستوری» به مطالعه ترتیب زمانی موقعیت ها در جملات نقل قول غیرمستقیم می پردازند. این ترتیب بیانگر رابطه زمانی است و تقدم، هم زمانی، یا تأخر موقعیت را نسبت به زمان جهت یابی نشان می دهد. مطالعه حاضر در زبان فارسی به بررسی تقدم زمان موقعیت جمله پیرو می پردازد آنگاه که موقعیت جمله پایه با زمان دستوری آینده بیان می شود. سؤال تحقیق این است که زمان دستوری ماضی بعید در جملات مرکب فارسی چگونه تبیین می شود. روش تحقیق توصیفی- تحلیلی است وداده ها جملاتی از زبان فارسی معیار هستند که با شم زبانی نویسندگان انتخاب و ارزیابی شده اند. با به کارگیری چارچوب نظری دکلرک (۱۹۹۱ الف)، و معنی شناسی و کاربردشناسی حاصل از قوانین محاوره گرایس (۱۹۷۵) فرضیه مناسبی برای پاسخ به سؤال تحقیق فراهم می شود. مطابق فرضیه تحقیق، به شرط دیرشی بودن، آغاز موقعیت جمله پایه با زمان دستوری آینده می تواند نسبت به بقیه آن، گذشته تعبیر شود. این زمان گذشته، زمان جهت یابی لازم برای ماضی بعید را فراهم می سازد. بنابراین، تقدم در دامنه آینده در حالت بی نشان با زمان های دستوری گذشته یا ماضی نقلی و در حالت نشاندار با زمان دستوری ماضی بعید بیان می شود.

Textbooks considered as one of the most important genres of academic writings would guarantee effective teaching and learning in EFL/ESL courses. Since textbooks are gaining more and more importance, the knowledge of their rhetorical organization that provides learners and teachers with efficient use of their content seems necessary. This article describes the rhetorical organization of the textbook genre based on Parodi’s three-tiered framework consisting of macro-move, move, and steps, which provides a detailed description of a textbook as an extended and lengthy genre. This study aims to rhetorically investigate four ESP textbooks written for undergraduate university programs for accounting students that were developed and published by Payam-e Nour University (PNU), as one of the largest universities in Iran. In order to fulfill the goals, the article aims to investigate the changes made over time in terms of move analysis between two series, each include introductory and advanced ESP textbooks, as well as explicate moves, steps, and their communicative purposes with their accompanying examples. The results aiming at enhancing learners’ and teachers’ perspective toward this genre provide a vivid picture of different rhetorical parts associated with various communicative purposes.

Focus on Lexis and L2 Learners' Development of Oral Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency Measures(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Second language (L2) theories have for long acknowledged the importance of focus on formulaicity or conventionalized lexical chunks. Yet, there has been little attempt to examine the impact of this on foreign language learners’ development of complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) measures. The purpose of this study was twofold: First, to see whether lexis-based instruction had any significant effects on EFL learners' oral CAF, and, second, whether different types of lexis-based instructions (e.g., using corpus-based concordances, textual lexis enhancement, and audio-visual captioned lexis) had differential effects. Participants were 54 EFL undergraduates at an Iranian university. After checking the initial homogeneity, <em>2</em> groups of participants were randomly assigned to experimental (lexis) and control (non-lexis) groups. After pretesting on CAF, the lexis sub-groups received the <em>3</em> types of lexis-based instructions in a counterbalanced manner. After each lexis instruction, students’ oral data were also obtained. The control group received mainstream non-lexis instruction. One-way MANCOVA results pointed to the significant effects of lexis instruction on oral CAF measures. Specifically, repeated-measures MANOVA results revealed that audio-visual captioned lexis was the most effective modality in heightening formulaicity. The findings suggest that focus on lexis is beneficial to L2 learners’ oral skills. Further theoretical and pedagogical implications are discussed.

کتاب «اقبال- مجدد عصر» از دکتر سهیل بخاری بر ۲۲۶ صفحه اشتمال دارد. این کتاب که اولین بار در سال ۱۹۷۶م به چاپ رسیده بود پس از تجدید نظر از سوی نویسنده آن دومین بار توسط اقبال آکادمی پاکستان در لاهور در سال ۱۹۹۰م به چاپ رسید. نویسنده در این کتاب کوشیده است که با ارائه اشعار اقبال و آرای منتقدین و محققین ثابت کند که اقبال نبی و پیغمبر عصر خویش بوده است که رسالت نجات امت اسلامی را بر دوش خویش احساس می کرده است.

Difficulties Facing Iranian EFL Senior High School Learners and Strategies They Use to Understand English Idioms(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

The objectives of the present study were threefold: First, it sought to investigate difficulties Iranian EFL high school learners face to understand English idioms. Second, it attempted to explore intermediate EFL learners’ language learning strategy preferences to comprehend idioms. Third, it aimed to examine whether there was a significant difference between successful and less successful students' strategy use in idiom comprehension. To this end, 200 Iranian male and female students of the three grades of different senior high schools in Qom, Iran, were selected through convenience sampling. They responded to a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire (Alhaysony, 2017), investigating the challenges of idiom comprehension. Afterwards, they took the Oxford Quick Placement Test. Ninety-eight of them were selected as intermediate learners. Third, they took a multiple-choice test on idiom comprehension, developed by the researcher, and responded to the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, 1990). Descriptive statistics, frequencies and means, and a one-sample t-test were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that the participants complained that idioms were challenging mainly because they were not taught well in class and were not part of the course syllabi. They also revealed that successful learners in understanding idioms used all six categories of strategies in the high and medium levels. They employed metacognitive strategies the most (M= 3.88), but affective strategies the least (M= 2.84). The results of the t-test suggested significant differences between successful and less successful learners' strategy use. The results provide insights into the challenges and strategies of English idiom comprehension.

A Genre Analysis of the Introduction Section of Applied Linguistics and Chemistry Research Articles(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

This study investigated the cross-disciplinary variations in the generic structure of Introduction sections of 52 Applied Linguistics and 52 Chemistry research articles drawing upon Swales’ (2004) framework, taking into account the new insights proposed by Bhatia (2004), Shehzad (2008), and Lim (2012, 2014). To this end, in addition to collecting quantitative data and conducting frequency and Chi-square analyses, a number of semi-structured interviews were conducted with some Chemistry scholars and Applied Linguistics (ALs) experts for triangulation purposes. The results of the quantitative data analysis indicated that the two disciplines showed significant variations in the frequency with which they used some steps and sub-steps to realize the moves. The results of the qualitative content analysis of the interviews also helped understand why authors in each discipline might use a specific move/step more than the others and why a move/step was frequently used by the authors in one discipline, but completely absent in another. Finally, based on the results, some implications were presented to postgraduate students and novice researchers in Chemistry and Applied Linguistics to help them write effective research articles in their field. The findings of the study could also provide some practical implications for the EAP teachers to help their students become better writers. In addition, some suggestions were presented to genre analysts to help them obtain more dependable results when analyzing the generic structure of various sections of research articles.

افادات نوشته دکتر تحسین فراقی، استاد و رییس سایق گروه زبان و ادبیات اردو در دانشکده خاورشناسی دانشگاه پنجاب پاکستان که شامل 13 مقاله با موضوعات ادبیات اردو می باشد. این کتاب در285 صفحه از انتشارات سنگ میل پبلی کیشنز لاهور در سال 2004 میلادی به چاپ رسیده است. نویسنده از ابعاد مختلف به آثار ادبی شاعران و نویسندگان قدیم و بیشتر معاصر اردو پرداخته است. در مورد جایگاه نوع ادبی مرثیه در زبان اردو تا ظهور میرانیس در قرن نوزدهم میلادی و سپس در مقالات بعدی به جنبه هایی از شعر شاعران مشهور و اثرگذار قرن بیستم زبان اردو مانند اکبر اله آبادی، حفیظ هوشیارپوری، ماهرالقادری، شهزاد احمد، عبدالعزیز خالد و غیره پرداخته شده است.
