The coronavirus pandemic has attracted the international media since the first infection was identified in Wuhan, China in late 2019. Despite the similar frames all around the world, the present study assumes that international media have not portrayed the countries with confirmed outburst of the disease in similar terms. It is believed that diseases in the world are both political and biological. The present study, therefore, employs media framing, as conducted by Entman and Van Gorp, to analyze the first fifty VOA and BBC Persian news that covered the spread of COVID-19 in Iran. These agencies are chosen for their significant position in the western public diplomacy and their probable influence within the country. The results indicate that the outbreak of COVID-19 in Iran is framed in seven major frame packages: Iran at crisis, Iran as the source of regional and international threatening virus, lack of determination and confidence in decision making in Iran, Iran’s incompetence and disqualification as an ill-equipped system, lying and hypocrisy in Iran, violation of human rights, and finally, Islamic political ideology as a source of corruption.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty members and students had to leave their face-to-face (FTF) classes and move into emergency distance education (EDE) contexts. Due to this drastic change in the system of education, investigating the probable effects of EDE on the quality of education seems essential. As such, this study has attempted to probe the effect of EDE on the language skills of Iranian EFL students. To do so, drawing on the maximum variation sampling, the present study embarked on a qualitative descriptive research method, triangulating data through written open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to collect data from 170 EFL students from different universities in Iran. The sample included BA students majoring in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and English Literature, aged above 18. Using Thematic Analysis (TA), students’ responses were transcribed, codified, and interpreted. The findings of TA revealed that along with several disadvantages and challenges that Iranian EFL students experienced in EDE with regard to learning English language skills, EDE provided some opportunities and benefits for their learning. The analysis of students’ responses also indicated that they deemed speaking skill as the most negatively influenced language skill and listening skill as the most positively affected skill. Furthermore, the findings represented that most of the students held teachers and administrators responsible for the problems and challenges they experienced in EDE contexts. The findings of the present study can encourage administrators, teachers, and students to prepare themselves for EDE against the possible subsequent waves.

The upheaval time of COVID-19 highlighted the importance of an effective way of teaching English to the front-line healthcare workers such as medical doctors and researchers with different digital-divide status, particularly in non-English-speaking countries because they were first-hand users of critical pandemic-related information in mostly-English articles published online by scientific journals. This study attempted to investigate the pedagogical effects of utilizing the two main User-Generated Content (UGC) platforms in E-learning, namely LMS vs. LXP, on the results of the Electronic Ministry of Health Language Examinations (E-MHLE) among Iranian English for Medical Purposes (EMP) learners across their digital-divide status (digital natives vs. digital immigrants) during the COVID-19 pandemic. A series of focus-group E-interviews were conducted to determine the reasons behind the lowest scores among the participants and to find out possible suggestions for success in high-stake E-tests. To this end, 272 EMP learners who were users of LMS and LXP were conveniently selected from a university of medical science to participate in this sequential explanatory mixed-method research. The results of descriptive and inferential statistics showed that the LXP group outperformed the LMS one in the results of E-MHLE. Moreover, the digital natives obtained higher scores than the digital immigrants in both groups but the difference was not significant in the LXP. The findings of the E-interviews were thematically analyzed and discussed. The findings of this study might offer practical and realistic benefits to the whole EMP community, particularly policymakers for the post-COVID-19 era.

This mixed-method study endeavored to solicit the perspectives of Iranian collegiate students passing the obligatory course of medical English through Navid Learning Management System and its acceptance during COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing Technology Acceptance Model, this study also sought to examine the possible effect gender, academic degree, instructional mode, and e-learning duration in LMS may have on the participants' attitudes. An online survey was employed to gather data from 78 Iranian students. Semi-structured interviews with ten participants were conducted as well to shed more light on the quantitative data regarding main advantages and disadvantages of medical English learning through Navid. The data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics along with inductive thematic analysis, respectively. Findings revealed that Iranian collegiate medical students viewed Navid as a comprehensive e-learning platform to be favorable in terms of its system/service quality, student/educational service quality, and perceived satisfaction, but its perceived satisfaction was not aligned with their needs. Moreover, neither the individual variables, (viz., age and academic degree), nor the instructional variables (viz., instructional mode and e-learning duration) were predictors of the discrepancies among the participants in their perspectives and acceptance of Navid. Learning ubiquitously and lacking face-to-face communication were the main advantage and disadvantage of learning medical English through Navid, respectively. Results revealed that although under the Covid-19 pandemic the acceptance of Navid and students' satisfaction with its use might not be related to the individual and instructional variables in the medical English courses, it might not be the case in others.

Corona Virus (COVID-19) is a major problem among people, and it causes suffering worldwide. Yet, the traditional prediction models are not yet suitably efficient in catching the fundamental expertise as they cannot visualize the difficulty in the health's representation problem areas. This paper states prediction mechanism that uses a model of deep learning called Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). We have carried this model out on corona virus dataset that obtained from the records of infections, deaths, and recovery cases across the world. Furthermore, producing a dataset which includes features of geographic regions (temperature and humidity) that have experienced severe virus outbreaks, risk factors, spatio-temporal analysis, and social behavior of people, a predictive model can be developed for areas where the virus is likely to spread. However, the outcomes of this study are justifiable to alert the authorities and the people to take precautions.

The continuing outbreak of COVID-19 pneumonia is globally concerning. Timely detection of infection ensures prompt quarantine of patient which is crucial for preventing the rapid spread of this contagious disease and also supports the patient with necessary medication. Due to the high infection rate of COVID-19, our health management system needs an automatic diagnosis tool that equips the health workers to pay immediate attention to the needy person. Chest CT is an essential imaging technique for diagnosis and staging of 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The identification of COVID-19 CT findings assists health workers on further clinical evaluation, especially when the findings on CT scans are trivial, the person may be recommended for Reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests. Literature reported that the ground-glass opacity (GGO) with or without consolidation are dominant CT findings in COVID-19 patients. In this paper, the U-Net based segmentation approach is proposed to automatically segment and analyze the GGO and consolidation findings in the chest CT scan. The performance of this system is evaluated by comparing the auto-segmented infection regions with the manually-outlines ones on 100 axial chests CT scans of around 40 COVID-19 patients from SIRM dataset. The proposed U-Net with pre-process approach yields specificity of 0.91 ± 0.09 and sensitivity of 0.87 ± 0.07 on segmenting GGO region and specificity of 0.81 ± 0.13 and sensitivity of 0.44 ± 0.17 on segmenting consolidation region. Also the experimental results confirmed that the automatic detection method identifies the CT finding with a precise opacification percentage from the chest CT image.

As the COVID-19 pandemic rages through the world, a “tsunami” of legal and economic issues including breach of contracts occurred in the private and public sectors. In Iran and throughout the world, almost all contracts contain so-called “force majeure” clauses, which excuse a business’s non-performance if circumstances beyond their control prevent (or sometimes hinder) performance. These clauses often list out the circumstances which excuse non-performance and they may include flood, fire, terrorism, war “Act of God” and sometimes epidemic. Due to the impacts of the pandemic on the price of materials and tremendous increase in the costs, contractors try to take COVID-19 as a legal excuse (force majeure) to breach the contract. The present paper tries to answer the questions that can the contractors take force majeure as a “get out of jail free” card? Does the COVID-19 outbreak constitute force majeure and excuse non-performance of contract? And how does it affect “time of Essence” clauses in contracts? Through the critical analysis method, this article scrutinizes the legal challenges of the issue.  Findings show that having a look ahead, the legislator has to redefine the meaning of force majeure in the Iranian and European law .

Education systems in the world are enduring COVID-19 induced perturbations and consequences. Given the growing use of E-learning during COVID-19 epidemic and expansion of Internet-based infrastructure, the need for a resilient approach to e-learning systems is deeply felt. This paper aims to address the issue of how to provide a model for evaluating the resilience of E-learning in Iranian virtual universities during the outbreak of coronavirus employing an Adaptive Neuro-Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS). In the present paper, 5 substantial factors including individual, assessment and support, content, agility, and technology were identified as inputs, and e-learning resilience was considered as single output. Moreover, ANFIS was employed to model the resilience of E-learning systems. Findings revealed almost medium to low degree of resilience for the e-learning system established in Iran’s virtual university. Statistical analysis demonstrated that there was no meaningful difference between experts’ opinions and our proposed procedure for E-learning resilience measurement. The proposed model showed significant sensitivity to changes in agility. Therefore, agility should be considered as the first priority in achieving the desired level of resilience for the e-learning systems of the Iranian virtual university.
