The Effects of Pot-Luck Flipped Classrooms (PFC) on the Development of Translation Competence: A Study of Novice Translators(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

This study investigates the effect of Pot-luck Flipped Classroom (PFC), meaning the implementation of pot-luck, as an innovative technique, in a flipped classroom (FC), on the development of translation competence (TC). The advances and developments in science and technology and the need to exchange the newly-developed information, knowledge, and technology highlights the demand to train professional translators, and thus, the development of TC becomes an essential skill of 21st. century. FC learning model and pot-luck innovative teaching technique have proven the enhancement of the effective learning. Therefore, in this study, we combined them as PFC to develop TC via collaboration and active involvement in a learner-centered environment. A total of 57 Translation Studies students, including 27 boys and 30 girls took part in this study. We used a quasi-experimental design with an experimental (PFC) and control group. Data were collected via Translation Competence Acquisition Questionnaire before and after the intervention of PFC. Findings showed a statistically significant difference (significant at 0.05) in all TC components in experimental group after the intervention of PFC. Thus, PFC proved to be efficient. Finally, pedagogical implications are discussed and suggestions for further studies are also provided.

Can Working Memory Be Trained through Learning an Additional Language? the effects of TPR versus PPP(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Given the seemingly important link between children’s working memory (WM) and their scholastic performance, it would be a worthwhile research enquiry to explore language learning as one potential way to improve WM. To this end, the present study examined the impact of two language teaching paradigms, namely, Presentation-Practice-Production (PPP) and Total Physical Response (TPR), on children’s WM over time. Seventy participants, aged 8 to 9 years, were administered tests of phonological, visuo-spatial sketchpad and central executive components, and made up TPR, PPP and control groups for a period of three months. Then, a posttest and a delayed posttest were administered to identify whether the treatments led to significant improvements. The results of the 3 WM measures indicated that the 2 interventions led to certain improvements. Whereas TPR led to significant improvements in the central executive, PPP produced significantly higher gains in phonological memory over time. Neither treatment induced any positive impact on the visuospatial sketchpad. The results lend evidence to the trainability of WM. It is also suggested that language learning experiences have long-lasting repercussions and that each language learning experience can impact certain components of WM.

هماهنگی شیوه تولید در کودکان فارسی زبان با رشد واجی عادی و بااختلال(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

تاکنون پژوهشی درباره فرایند هماهنگی در شیوه تولید کودکان فارسی زبان، چه کودکان عادی و چه کودکان مبتلا به اختلال واجی غیر عضوی. انجام نشده است؛ از این رو، پژوهش حاضر، هماهنگی شیوه تولید را در این دو گروه از کودکان که زبان فارسی را به مثابه زبان اول یاد می گیرند، ، بررسی کرده است .برای دستیابی به این منظور، الگوهای هماهنگی شیوه تولید در تعدادی از کودکان با رشد واجی نرمال و کودکانی با اختلال واجی غیرعضوی بررسی شد. داده های زبانی لازم از آزمونی به نام آزمون تصویرنامی به دست آمد. این آزمون حاوی 132 تصویر از اشیا مختلف است که منجر به تولید 132 واژه از سوی آزمون شونده می شود. بررسی داده ها، تعداد زیادی از هماهنگی شیوه تولید را در داده های هر دو گروه نشان داد ؛ اما تفاوت هایی نیز در انواع این هماهنگی در دو گروه مذکور دیده شد؛ هماهنگی انفجاری و خیشومی در هر دو گروه از کودکان و هماهنگی سایشی فقط در کودکان با رشد واجی عادی ملاحظه شد. تحلیل الگوهای هماهنگی شیوه تولید ملاحظه شده در گفتار کودکان عادی و با اختلال واجی فارسی زبان در چارچوب فرضیه آسانی تولیدو رویکرد نشانه های درکی به این نتیجه منجر شده است که در کودکان با اختلال واجی فقط محدودیت های تولیدی عامل تعیین کننده در فرایند هماهنگی شیوه تولید هستند، حال آنکه در کودکان عادی، که در مجموع محدودیت های کمتری در تولید آواها دارند، عوامل درکی نیز در بروز هماهنگی شیوه تولید نقش دارند. همچنین، برخلاف یافته های پیشین، کودکان فارسی زبان تفاوتی در اعمال محدودیت بر انتخاب آوای هدف هماهنگی در انواع مختلف هماهنگی شیوه تولید نشان نداده اند.

The fact that many indigenous languages in Indonesia have been dying out as a result of the ineffective way of language planning. This study aims to construct critical thinking indicators and to describe the strategies used for enhancing critical thinking in language planning (LP) concerning local language maintenance, particularly Banjarese language. The qualitative method was employed in which all data were elaborated in a descriptive manner by employing an interview and documentation to collect the data. The former was performed by interviewing the two older native Banjarese persons: The one is a researcher focusing on native languages as well as on Banjarese maintenance; and the other is the main official person in charge of history and tradition maintenance of the Education and Culture Service of South Kalimantan. The latter was done by taking articles concerning Banjarese maintenance and its teaching, and policy documents issued by the government. The data were analyzed through content analysis. The result shows that there is no curriculum design to maintain Banjarese at schools. The local government’s support in maintaining Banjarese does neither run well nor seems to be serious. The existence of local government regulation No. 7/2009 about the local language maintenance does not continue to practical procedures on how local language should be designed and taught at schools. Therefore, the issues of Banjarese should be the main indicator to map needs analysis in local language maintenance and strategies for language planning dealing with the classroom as the way of teaching Banjarese

Examination of Iraqi EFL Teachers’ Attitudes, Intentions, and Practices Regarding Formative Assessment

This study aims to explore the attitudes and practices of Iraqi EFL teachers regarding formative assessment (FA). A total of 102 teachers from primary school to university filled in the Arabic version of Teachers' Conceptions and Practices of Formative Assessment Questionnaire. The questionnaire was translated from English into Arabic first and was validated using confirmatory factor analysis (Hazim Jawad, 2020). Findings showed that a 7-factor model had acceptable fit indices (GFI=0.90, CFI=0.91, RMSEA=0.05). Descriptive statistics were used to explain Iraqi EFL teachers’ attitudes and intentions regarding FA. Findings showed that the majority of Iraqi teachers believe that formative assessment is a useful procedure for measuring students’ learning and is helpful in their education. They also indicated that they have a positive attitude towards FA and are willing to use it. Correlational analysis showed that Affective Attitude, Instrumental Attitude, Subjective Norm, Controllability, and Self-Efficacy were strong predictors of intentions to use formative assessment. However, only Instrumental Attitude had a small significant correlation with the Behavior Scale. In other words, those teachers who believe that FA is useful in improving students learning tend to actually employ FA in their teaching. Findings also showed that female teachers have more positive attitudes towards FA and tend to use it more in their teaching. Implications of the findings for improving English language teaching are discussed.

زبان شناسی شناختی اجتماعی یکی از جدیدترین رویکردهای کاربرد- بنیاد به مطالعه زبان و تنوعات اجتماعی آن است که در دهه های اخیر با هم گرایی زبان شناسی شناختی و زبان شناسی اجتماعی ایجاد شده است و رسالت آن مطالعه شناختی زبان در انواع تنوعاتش است. از سوی دیگر، فرهنگ نگاری از کاربردی ترین و مفید ترین دستاوردهای زبان شناسی است که هدفش ثبت زبان و تلویحاً تلاش برای استاندارد کردن زبان است. اما چگونه می توان این دو نگاه را که، اولی به دنبال مطالعه تنوع (و بنابراین واگرایی)، و دومی به دنبال ثبت و استانداردسازی زبان (و بنابراین هم گرایی) است، با هم جمع کرد؟ این مقاله پس از معرفی اجمالی چارچوب زبان شناسی شناختی اجتماعی، به معرفی و مقایسه رویکردهایی می پردازد که در این چارچوب بر روی فرهنگ نگاری انجام شده است.

نگاهی به شبکه معنایی دو تکواژ /-oir (e)/ و /- atoire/ در زبان فرانسه با رویکرد تطبیقی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

در پژوهش حاضر، به بررسی و تحلیل ساختارِ نحوی و شبکه معنایی دو تکواژ پُربسامد /-oir/ و //-atoire در زبان فرانسه پرداخته ایم. بر پایه رویکرد تحلیلیِ مقاله، معادلِ فارسی واژگان پیکره پژوهش را نیز بررسی کرده ایم تا روند اشتقاق آن ها را در هر دو زبان مقایسه کنیم و ببینیم آیا در فارسی نیز در همان شبکه معنایی قرار می گیرند یا معانی دیگری نیز می توانند در این زبان داشته باشند. این تکواژها که به صورت پسوند استفاده می شوند، در رایج ترین حالتِ خود «مکان ساز» هستند، مانند کاربرد این پسوند در واژه «Abattoir» به معنای «کشتارگاه» و یا در واژه «Laboratoire» به مفهوم «آزمایشگاه». با این وجود، نکته مهم این است که مکان های مورد نظر همیشه واقعی نیستند و گاه به صورت مجازی به کار می روند، مانند کاربرد این پسوند در واژه «Mémoire» به معنای «حافظه» که در واقع مکانی برای حفظ مطالب است. بر پایه نقش پسوند «ابزارساز» /-oir/ در واژه «Arrosoir» به معنای «آب پاش» و پسوند «صفت ساز»    //-atoire در واژه «Evocatoire» به مفهوم «احضارکننده»، ساختار ویژه ای در هر دو زبان وجود دارد که با شرح جزئیات و آوردن نمونه های گوناگون، به مطالعه آن ها نیز پرداخته ایم. همچنین در این پژوهش، به استثناهای هر گروه از واژگان نیز اشاره شده و به این ترتیب می توان ادعا نمود که تحلیل این دو تکواژ در زبان فرانسه و معادل هایشان در فارسی از ورای نمونه های گوناگون و متنوع، امکان مقایسه ساختار نحوی، شبکه معنایی و وجوه اشتراک و افتراق آن ها را برای خواننده فراهم می کند.

Digital Literacy Skills among Iranian EFL Teachers and Students

Nowadays, digital literacy and the use of digital resources and communication tools in academic contexts have been promoted by the rise of digital civilization in the 21st-century. Thus, this research aimed to study the digital literacy of Iranian EFL teachers and students to find out any significant difference between them. One hundred and fifty Iranian EFL teachers, and 175 Iranian EFL students were invited to participate in this study. A 181-item standardized measure developed and validated by Khlaisang and Koraneekij (2019) was used to assess individuals’ three crucial 21st-century digital skills namely Information Literacy (IL), Media Literacy (ML), and Information Communication Technology Literacy (ICTL). To find that whether this difference is significant or not, a t-test was run. The results highlight that Iranian EFL teachers' scores were higher than students in all the three constructs of IL, ML, and ICTL, and ICTL had the highest mean score among all. The data regarding teachers’ and students’ digital literacy can be a reference for educational planners and decision-makers to identify digital skills which should be considered more seriously at the university level especially in these Coronavirus days.

سومری نگارها در متون میان رودانی و آرامی نگارها در فارسی میانه(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

کاتبان اکدی با زیر شاخه هایش، واژه ها را به اکدی به شکل هجایی و واژه نگار می نگاشتند. گهگاه به جای نوشتن واژه به اکدی، معادل آن را به سومری می نگاشتند. این روش نوشتاری، موسوم به واژه نگار و سومری نگار است. پس از شکل گیری شاهنشاهی آشور، در سده نهم پ.م، آنها زبان و خط اَرامی را در قلمرو شاهنشاهی خود به کار گرفتند. این موضوع سبب شد که زبان و خط اَرامی به عنوان زبان بین المللی برای مکاتبه مورد استفاده قرار گیرد. در نتیجه، شاهان هخامنشی زبان و خط اَرامی را برای مکاتبات رسمی به کار بردند و پارتی و پهلوی هم شمار بسیاری از واژگان اَرامی را به کار گرفتند که به آنان اَرامی نگار می گفتند. هدف از نگارش مقاله این است تا متون میانرودانی و فارسی میانه را به عنوان یک منبع در کاربرد املاهای بیقاعده بررسی نماییم و اینکه چرا این نظام در میان رودان و دوران میانه زبان فارسی باب بوده است. بنابراین، روش کار نخست چگونگی کاربرد سومری نگارها در متون اکدی و زیر شاخه های آن است و پس از آن به اَرامی نگارها می پردازیم که پارتیان و ساسانیان از آن بهره بردند. در پایان آشکار می گردد همان گونه که اکدیان از سومری نگارها در املای بیقاعده از زبان پیشین خود وام گرفتند، به همان گونه فارسی میانه از اَرامی، به عنوان یک زبان بین المللی وام گرفت

The Effect of Unit-of-Translation on Iranian Upper-Intermediate EFL Learners’ Achievement in Bizarre News Translation

The current study was an attempt to investigate whether the Unit-of-Translation has any effect on Iranian upper-intermediate EFL learners’ achievement in Bizarre News translation. In addition, it investigated whether there was any difference across gender regarding the effect of Unit-of-Translation on Iranian upper-intermediate EFL learners’ achievement in Bizarre News translation. To this end, 45 out of 88 EFL learners from three upper-intermediate language learners at two Language Institutes in Boumehen, Iran were selected based on Oxford Placement Test. Then, they were divided randomly into three groups; one control group (N=15) and two experimental groups (N=30). The first experimental group was male. The second experimental was female, and the third group was administered as the control group. The experimental groups received the instruction for unit of translation. The instruction was given in five sequential sessions about 50 minutes. In contrast, the control group received no special instruction. At the end of the course, a post-test was administered. To analyze the data, one-way ANOVA and independent samples t-test were run. The findings revealed that the Unit-of-Translation had a positively significant effect on Iranian upper-intermediate EFL learners’ achievement in Bizarre News translation. The results also indicated that concerning the effect of Unit-of-Translation on Iranian male upper-intermediate EFL learners had a better achievement in Bizarre News translation compared to their counterparts in the female group.

Iranian EFL Learners’ and Teachers’ Attitudes Toward Critical Cultural Awareness Model of Validation(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Critical cultural awareness (CCA) as an essential element of intercultural competence has attracted a myriad of scholars in the fields of language teaching, communication studies, cultural studies, gender studies, ethnic studies among others. That is why this study aims to investigate the attitudes of Iranian high school teachers and learners toward critical cultural awareness. The participants of the study included 307 teachers and 359 learners in different high schools in Qazvin. All the participants filled out the Critical Cultural Awareness Questionnaire. The data were then fed into SPSS software and were subjected to Principal Components Analysis. Three factors were extracted and named as CCA in ELT Programs, CCA in ELT Textbooks and Materials, and CCA in General Terms. The participants’ responses were analyzed based on these factors. The results of item analysis revealed that both teachers and learners indicated that all cultures should be equally addressed in ELT textbooks and materials. It was also concluded that the teachers' and learners’ awareness regarding the integration of culture into the mainstream teaching should be raised and they should put more emphasis on culture in their classes. One significant implication for EFL teachers and also syllabus designers is that an intercultural curriculum can enable learners to understand the target materials more efficiently.

Comic Strips and Grammar Development among Iranian Teenage EFL Learners

This study was an attempt to examine the effect of using comic strips on improving grammar recognition and performance among Iranian young EFL learners. To this end, one experimental and one control groups were formed, each having 45 preintermediate participants chosen via convenience sampling. The researcher-made pretests of grammar and speaking assured the researchers that the participants did not know the grammatical points targeted in this study. In continuation, the experimental group received grammar instruction with the aid of comic strips, and the control group was taught the same grammar points through conventional methods of grammar teaching. After 16 sessions, both groups sat for a researcher-made grammar posttest and speaking test. Also, an interview was conducted to evaluate the extent to which the treatment for the experimental group and conventional instruction for the control group were effective. Data collected from the groups were, then, submitted for data analysis including ANOVA and t test. Results indicated that the implementation of comic strips could have a positive effect on grammatical competence and performance.

EFL Teachers’ Views and Implementation of Problem-Solving Tasks in the Algerian Secondary Schools

The present paper addresses the issues of EFL teachers’ views and implementation of problem solving in third-year classes in the Algerian Secondary Schools. The focal aim is to highlight the importance of problem solving as a means to improve the activities of teaching and learning. The survey involved a random sample of 50 teachers to whom a questionnaire was administered. Marzano’s (2001) New Taxonomy of Educational Objectives was used as the analytical framework. According to the obtained findings, teachers (96%) agreed that problem solving is a crucial component of instruction. The majority of teachers claimed that they implement problem-solving tasks in the classroom. The main benefits of implementing problem solving in the classroom that the respondents mentioned include: the development of students’ cognitive abilities, their autonomy, and the teaching practices. The findings have important implications for pedagogical strategies that might promote the teaching and assessment of problem solving in EFL contexts.

An Exploratory Study of Iranian EFL Teachers’ Agency: Conceptions and Practices

The need for a strong educational system is felt more than ever due to globalization. In this respect, teacher agency has an important role in educational change. This qualitative meta-study, therefore, addressed the attitude of the teachers towards agency and the way they enact agency to facilitate learning process. To this purpose, the needed data were gathered from the narrative of life, professional history and class observations of five English teachers in Iranian context. Then, based on the Grounded Theory Approach, the data were analyzed and the obtained results showed that teachers’ pre-teaching and during teaching processes were made up of complex relationships among different resources; that is, teachers’ life ideology (their perception towards themselves and their job) and financial status. At the same time, the results revealed that teachers’ instruction experiences highly affect both their magnification of agency and their decision-making processes. It was further seen that agency was not stable at all, meaning that social factors and environmental conditions played important roles in shaping teacher’s agency.

محدودیت های همنشینی همخوان ها در مرز اشتقاق در زبان فارسی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

هدف پژوهش حاضر، بررسی محدودیت های واجی حاکم بر همنشینی همخوان ها در مرز اشتقاق ِواژه های زبان فارسی است. این پژوهش نشان می دهد تا چه اندازه جایگاه تولید، شیوه تولید و مشخصه واک می تواند در همنشینی همخوان ها مؤثر باشد. در این پژوهش، 1362 واژه مشتق دارای توالی همخوانی از فرهنگ مشیری (1388) استخراج و بررسی شده است. بسامد توالی ها در پیکره موردِ مطالعه و بسامد هریک از همخوان ها در توالی، در هریک از جایگاه ها ارائه شده است. نتایج این بررسی نشان می دهد که همخوان ها با تفاوت های بسامدی چشمگیری در توالی همخوانی ظاهر می شوند. توالی های سایشی-غیرسایشی دارای بیشترین بسامد و توالی های دوخیشومی دارای کمترین بسامد هستند. مقایسه فراوانی همخوان ها به عنوان عضو اوّل و دوم توالی نشان می دهد که تمامی 23 همخوان زبان فارسی در جایگاه اوّل توالی در مرز اشتقاق حضور دارند؛ ولی تنها 12 همخوان در جایگاه دوم می توانند حضور داشته باشند. از میان 198 نوع توالی، 54 درصد از توالی ها به لحاظ مشخصه واک همسان هستند؛ درحالی که 46 درصد توالی ها از این نظر ناهمسان هستند. بنابراین، گرایش به سمت همسانی در این مشخصه، با اختلاف اندکی بیشتر از ناهمسانی است. وضعیت واک داری باتوجّه به جایگاه اوّل و دوم توالی تغییر درخور توجهی نشان نمی دهد.

Gender Identity in Verb Type Occurrences: A Study of ‘Active’ Series(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

The present research was an attempt to investigate gender portrayal represented in EFL reading textbooks. Using Johnson and Young’s (2002) verb taxonomy , the reading passages of the four books of the Active Skills for Reading series were selected as the corpus. Qualitative content analysis was employed to identify the type and frequency of verb categories including, action , competition/destruction , agency/control , limited, state, feeling and nurturing , and negative verbs. Based on the results of statistical analysis, no significant difference was demonstrated in frequencies of verb types assigned to each gender other than in Action and Limited verb elements which were biased toward males. Moreover, it was revealed that males were assigned to some social roles which were traditionally attributed to female characters. In addition, the findings revealed that there was no significant difference between doer vs. receiver roles allocated to male and female characters. The results of the study can shed more light on micro and macro policymaking in the area of education, language teaching, curriculum development, and materials preparation for EFL courses.

Despite its sociopolitical basis, Academic Literacy (AL) is recently referred to as a set of complex skills such as writing, which lays undeniable foundations for success in academic communities (Hyland & Lyons, 2002). This study is aimed at improving students' AL in general and their writing skill in particular at Khaje Nasiredin Toosi (KNT) University of Science and Technology. Based on the domain of EAP (Flowerdew & Peacock, 2001; Jordan, 1997), and among various academic assignments (Braine, 1995; Canseco & Byrd, 1989), students' summary writings at KNT University were selected to be investigated. Besides the summaries, 20 students were interviewed to delve more into the problematic areas. Data analysis of 1270 written errors indicated that sequence of tense, article use, and appropriate selection of words are the most prevalent error types. Further analysis of the data revealed that students had failed to develop their ideas properly in unified paragraphs. Moreover, students were unsuccessful to put their ideas in the simple format of introduction, body, and conclusion. The paragraphs also lacked cohesive ties. The article, accordingly, ends with some practical recommendations addressing the present issues.

The Effect of Intensive Planned Focus on Form on the Implicit L2 Knowledge of Iranian EFL Learners(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Attention to form in input now seems to have found its way into second language acquisition (SLA), and it is recommended that language learners’ consciousness be raised for language learning to occur and become intake. Input enhancement and output have received considerable attention in recent SLA as two attention-drawing devices. In the present study, we chose visual input enhancement to examine its effect on noticing and acquisition. To that end, two classes were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Both groups were exposed to ten different short stories for ten sessions for five weeks, but the type of exposure was different for each group. The English third person singular was highlighted for the experimental group through formatting techniques such as underlining, italicizing, and capitalising. Language learners in the experimental group were supposed to answer the questions following each short story and write a summary for it. Both groups were post tested one week after the treatment on both Noticing Test and a Written Production Test. The results of two independent t-tests showed the superiority of experimental group over the control group in noticing and learning the third person singular. Implications of the findings are discussed.
