بررسی و تحلیل برخی از دیدگاه های زبانی امام بخش صهبایی با تکیه بر شرح سه نثر ظهوری(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

اثر هنری دیگرگونه نگریستن است و این نگرش هنری در کارکردهای زبانی آشکار می گردد. بهره گیری از عناصر زبانی نیز، نشانگر نگرش هنری هنرمند است؛ به این معنا که نویسنده با به کارگیری زبان هنری اثرش را فصیح و بلیغ و تأثیرگذار می گرداند. در پژوهش پیشِ رو به روش توصیفی-تحلیلی سعی کرده ایم به خوانش عناصر تازه کتاب «شرح سه نثر ظهوری» که نماینده نقد زبان شناسی نوظهور قرن نوزدهم میلادی در شبه قاره است بپردازیم؛ عناصر تازه ای چون اختلاف لغات براساس اختلاف مصوت و صامت، بدل البدل نوع تازه ای از ابدال، توافق اللسانین در مبحث لغت. هدف اصلی این پژوهش، کشف و معرفی این عناصر تازه زبانی است که در حوزه زبان شناسی دوره صهبایی مطرح بوده است. دستاوردها گویای این است که شارح به خوبی توانسته در شرح اثر، ارتباط بین سه عنصر اساسی پدیدآورنده، متن و مخاطب را حفظ و موازین علمی زبان شناسی را که هنوز در حال تکوین بوده، رعایت کند. همچنین او به خوبی توانسته است مسائل زبانی دوره خود را، طبق اصول و موازین علمی روزگار در آثار خود پی بگیرد. بازخوانی علمی آرای زبانی صهبایی و معاصرانش می تواند برای مخاطب در ادراک آثار ادبی این دوره، شعرشناسی، نثرپژوهی و در نتیجه، غنابخشی به ظرفیت های نقد زبانی مؤثر افتد.

The Relationship between Iranian EFL Learners’ Linguistic and Logical Intelligences and the Frequency of Fallacies and Evidence in their Argumentative Writing: A Gender-based Study(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

The learners’ ability to write a well-organized argumentative essay has gained prominence within the last decades. The multiple intelligences play a significant role in enhancing the precision of both language and thought during the writing process. The current study aimed at investigating the possible relationship between linguistic and logical intelligences and the frequency of informal fallacies and evidence types in Iranian EFL learners’ argumentative essays. To the end, a total of 110 upper-intermediate EFL learners were asked to respond to the relevant items of Multiple Intelligences Developmental Assessment Scale (MIDAS) and to write an argumentative essay. The informal fallacies and four categories of evidence were identified using two models of argumentation. Among several categories of informal fallacies and evidence, only statistical evidence was absent in argumentative essays. The results of Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient revealed a significant relationship between the participants’ linguistic and logical intelligences and the frequency of informal fallacies and evidence types in their argumentation. However, no significant difference was found between male and female EFL learners in terms of the frequency of informal fallacies and evidence types in their argumentative essays. The findings contribute to enhancing the efficiency of writing materials and courses by considering the learners’ individual differences.

Interactionist and Interventionist Dynamic Assessment Approaches to Teaching Argumentative Writing: Do Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency Develop?(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

Complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) are measures of language proficiency in productive skills. This study with a non-equivalent control group pretest-post-test design explored whether Dynamic Assessment (DA) procedures enhances EFL teachers' writing CAF. Three 22-member groups of homogeneous teachers were randomly assigned to one control group (Non-DA), an interactionist DA group (IA-DAG), and an interventionist DA group (IV-DAG). After the nine-session treatment, the study groups took a writing post-test. A one-way ANOVA test showed that the experimental groups outperformed the control group, although no significant differences were found between DA groups. Besides, no statistically significant differences were found between the groups' writing complexity. Considering accuracy, IA-DAG outperformed Non-DAG whereas no significant differences were observed between the experimental groups and between IV-DAG and Non-DAG. Fluency measures showed the superiority of DA groups to the control group. The first conclusion was that DA processes have a decisive role in improving writing skills and the CAF triad. Second, CAF components do not develop in a linear process, and employing DA procedures can be useful for its improvement. The paper has implications for language teachers and SLA researchers.

The Effect of Individually-Generated, Teacher-Generated, and Cooperatively-Generated Graphic Organizers on Intermediate EFL Students' Vocabulary Knowledge(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

Although previous studies have shown the benefits of graphic organizers in improving learners' vocabulary knowledge, scant attention has been paid to the possible differences in the effect of individually-developed, cooperatively-developed, and teacher-developed graphic organizers on intermediate L2 learners' vocabulary knowledge. The present study addressed this topic by examining 80 intermediate language learners. The participants were selected based on convenience sampling procedure and studied English in four classes. The learners in the conventional group received the translation/definition of the lexical items. Those in the teacher-generated were provided with the graphic organizers prepared by their teacher, and the participants in the other two groups made the graphic organizers either individually or cooperatively. The researchers employed Vocabulary Knowledge Scale as the pre-test, immediate post-test, and delayed post-test to examine the participants' vocabulary knowledge. The findings of this study indicated that the mean scores of the control group in the immediate and delayed post-tests were significantly lower than those of all graphic organizer groups. In addition, the cooperatively-generated graphic organizer group was significantly more successful than learner and teacher-generated graphic organizer groups, but there was no difference between the learner and teacher-generated groups.

بررسی افراشتگی واکه در گویش سبزواری در چارچوب واج شناسی زایشی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

در این پژوهش انواع فرایند افراشتگی واکه در گویش سبزواری با توجه به بافت های مختلف آن در چارچوب واج شناسی زایشی تحلیل می شوند. مسأله اصلی نگارنده در این مقاله مطالعه انواع بافت های واجی ای است که فرایند افراشتگی واکه را در این گویش ایجاد می کند. داده های این پژوهش به دو روش گردآوری شده اند: منابع مکتوب درباره گویش سبزواری و ضبط گفتار چند گویشور سبزواری. در بررسی داده ها صورت های واجی و آوایی در گویش سبزواری با هم مقایسه و سپس تحلیل شده اند. در این پژوهش، داده های فارسی معیار به عنوان شاهد استفاده شده اند. نتایج این پژوهش نشان می دهد که دو بافت واجی عمده وجود دارد که در آنها فرایند افراشتگی واکه رخ می دهد: در اثر هم نشینی واکه های افتاده یا میانی با همخوان های افراشته لثوی-کامی، کامی و نرمکامی و نیز در اثر هم نشینی واکه های افتاده یا میانی با همخوان های خیشومی. در مجموع نُه نمونه فرایند افراشتگی واکه در گویش سبزواری روی می دهد.

گدایی پشت در شورای امنیت سازمان ملل؛ استعاره، مجاز و آمیختگی مفهومی در کارتون های سیاسی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

کارتون های سیاسی ابزارهایی نیرومند و تأثیرگذارند که در خدمت بیان مفاهیم و دیدگاه های سیاسی درمی آیند و در آنها به وفور از سازوکارهای شناختی مانند استعاره، مجاز و آمیختگی مفهومی استفاده می شود. در هشت سال گذشته «برجام» مهم ترین موضوع در سیاست خارجی ایران بوده که در کارتون های سیاسی داخلی نیز بازتاب گسترده ای یافته است. یکی از موضوعاتی که در سال 1399 به محل منازعه بین آمریکا و دیگر کشورهای عضو برجام تبدیل شد، مکانیزم ماشه بود. در پژوهش حاضر در چارچوب سه نظریه استعاره مفهومی (لیکاف و جانسون، 1980؛ لیکاف، 1993)، استعاره چندوجهی (فورسویل، 1996، 2009) و آمیختگی مفهومی (فوکونیه و ترنر، 2002) دو کارتون سیاسی با موضوع مکانیزم ماشه از پایگاه اینترنتی خبرگزاری تسنیم استخراج و بررسی شده اند. نتایج این بررسی نشان می دهد که یکی از کارتون ها حول محور آمیختگی مفهومی میان دو فضای ذهنی «تکدی گری» و «فعال سازی مکانیزم ماشه» شکل گرفته است و دیگری حول محور استعاره «مکانیزم ماشه، یک تفنگ است». علاوه بر استعاره و آمیختگی مفهومی، دو مجاز مفهومی اساسی نیز در کارتون ها یافت می شود؛ یکی «شخص به جای کشور/ دولت» و دیگری «مکان به جای سازمان/ نهاد». کارتونیست با این سازوکارهای شناختی تلاش ترامپ و دولت او را برای فعال سازی مکانیزم ماشه تلاشی از سر ضعف و درماندگی و محکوم به شکست ترسیم کرده است.

The Relationship between Iranian EFL Learners' Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary Size and Lexical Coverage of the Text: The Case of Narrative and Argumentative Genres(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

This study explored the relationship between EFL learners’ vocabulary size, lexical coverage of the text and reading comprehension texts (narrative & argumentative genres). To this end, 120 male and female out of 180 students studying at Talesh Azad University were selected based on their performance on the Nelson Proficiency Test. A Nelson reading proficiency test was also administered in order to check the homogeneity of the learners in their reading proficiency. After that, the researcher administered reading comprehension tests with narrative and argumentative genres in order to find the lexical coverage and vocabulary size for such reading tests. Learners' Vocabulary size was measured by the Levels Test, while their lexical coverage was measured by the newest version of Vocabulary Profile. In order to probe any significant relationship between the variables of the study, Pearson Correlationwas run. Results of the study showed that there was a strong relationship among vocabulary size, text coverage, and reading comprehension test at different genres.

بررسی فرایند ترکیب و دسته بندی آن از نظر معنایی و رابطه بین عناصر سازنده آن در زبان مازندرانی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

در پژوهش حاضر کلمات مرکب مازندرانی برگرفته از فرهنگ تبری (نصری اشرفی، 1381)، از نظر معنایی و رابطه بین عناصر سازنده بررسی شده است. برمبنای دسته بندی بیستو و اسکالیز (2005)، به عنوان چارچوب نظری پژوهش، ترکیب سه دسته اصلی همپایگی، اسنادی/ توصیفی و وابستگی را در بر می گیرد. این دسته بندی مبتنی بر روابط دستوری ممکن بین دو سازه در ساختارهای نحوی است. از نظر رابطه بین عناصر سازنده، ترکیب دو دسته فعلی و غیرفعلی را شامل می شود. تأکید مقاله حاضر عمدتا بر ترکیب فعلی و دسته بندی آن است. ترکیب فعلی نوعی ترکیب وابسته است که در ساختار آن سازه غیرفعلی، متمم سازه فعلی است. ترکیب های فعلی از نظر معنایی به چهار دسته موضوعی، غیرموضوعی، گروهی و مکرر تقسیم بندی می شوند. شواهد نشان می دهدکه انطباق نسبتا کاملی بین مازندرانی و دسته بندی بیستو و اسکالیز وجود دارد.

Fostering Speaking via Integrated Questioning: Does it Count for Transcontextual Transferability?(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

Given the significance and problematic nature of speaking in EFL instruction as well as lack of orthodoxy of views on acceptance or rejection of language learning transferability, this study proposed an inventive model to teaching thinking via questioning as a way to trigger speaking. It compromises six components, and organizes a rich interactive teaching/learning environment to gauge its usefulness in the development of EFL learners' oral skill as well as its inter-domain transferability effects. To this end, we compared the performance of 60 participants on pre-post-treatment oral narrative tasks over thirteen treatment sessions with a time allocation of 45 minutes for each session: One group with isolated questioning instruction and the other with integrated one. The results of independent samples t-test indicated that instructional treatment assisted the experimental group participants to outperform the control group learners solely in terms of measures of lexical and grammatical complexity. It is also suggested that the merits of questioning intervention transfer to learners' performance on a delayed task in a new social domain. As proposed, implementing the integrated approach of HOQs assisted EFL learners to successfully accomplish demanding oral tasks initially in academic setting and in later delayed novel transcontextual settings.

The current study examined the Iranian EFL teachers’ and students’ perceptions about Communication Strategies Teachability. The study was conducted with 20 teachers and 110 students from universities and private language Institutes in Tabriz, Iran. The literature regarding the teachability of communication strategies (CSs) has been far from conclusive. Some researchers reject the possibility of CSs instruction while many empirical studies support their teachability. Taking a mixed method design, the present study used a language proficiency test, a questionnaire and an interview for data collection. In the quantitative phase, the participants’ responses to questionnaire before and after a 12-week period of teaching CSs were statistically compared. The analysis of the quantitative data obtained from the questionnaire through Paired-samples t-test indicated that the students’ perceptions towards the usefulness of CSs grew significantly more positive after their instruction. The qualitative analysis of the interview data collected from the teachers indicated that most teachers found CSs useful and possible to teach. It was also found that these strategies improved capability of English language learners to speak and enhaned their conciousness of CSs. This study could offer pedagogical implications for both teachers and students and pave the way for further studies in the field.

The impact of Motivational Scaffolding on Self-efficacy and Learning Achievement of Field Dependent/ Independent EFL Learners(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

The study investigated the impacts of motivational scaffolding as one of the most effective instructional procedures on self-efficacy and learning achievement of field-dependent and field-independent English language learners. This study attempted to use both qualitative and quantitative data to get more reliable results. As qualitative part, 15 teachers in a semi-structured interview, and as quantitative part, two groups of learners participated as experimental and control groups. Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire was used to determine students' self-efficacy. The Group Embedded Figures Test was administered to categorize them into groups of field-dependent and field-independent. To determine proficiency level, a pre-test and a post-test were used. As treatment, eight sessions of Bandura’s training were administered to improve self-efficacy. Analysis of the qualitative data was conducted using content analysis, and as quantitative analysis, two-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance was conducted. The results showed that learners’ interacting within motivational scaffolding improved their self-efficacy and their learning achievement, and there is no significant difference between learners in the dimensions of field-dependent, field-independent. The findings have implications for teachers and learners in educational settings to detect some factors affecting the English language learners’ language performance and their psychological status.

Impact of Process and Genre-Based Approaches to Writing on Iranian EFL Learners' Writing Performance across Creativity Levels(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

This study aimed at investigating the effect of process-based and genre- based approaches to writing instruction on Iranian EFL learners’ writing performance across high and low creativity levels. The study followed a quasi-experimental design and it was conducted with a homogenous sample of 72 learners who were selected from an initial group of 90 participants from a private language institute in Urmia, Iran. Based on the results of an English proficiency test known as Oxford Placement Test and a test of creativity known as Abedi-Schumacher Creativity Test, the participants were assigned into four groups of 18. The treatment period lasted for 10 sessions including pretest and posttest sessions. The results of ANCOVA statistics showed that the type of instruction had statistically significant effect on the learners’ writing performance, with the higher performance of genre-based over the process-based writing instruction, while the level of creativity had no significant effect on the participants’ writing scores. Furthermore, a significant interaction was observed between instruction type and the learners’ creativity level. The findings of this study have pedagogical implications for teachers, syllabus designers, and practitioners to use appropriate instructional methods in ELT with special attention on learners’ creativity levels.

A Comparative Study of COVID-19-Related Native and Nonnative News Headlines in Terms of Rhetorical Devices(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

News headlines like other pieces of writings use rhetorical devices. They are regarded as the initial informative and persuasive part of news stories. The goal of the present study was to analyze COVID-19-related native and non-native news headlines chosen from two main online news websites in Iran and England in terms of number and degree of utilization of sub-types of rhetorical devices. To this end, the 6-week corpus including 489 headlines relevant to corona-virus news (282 headlines selected from the BBC and 207 from the Tehran Times) were analyzed. Shams (2013) and Picello (2018) taxonomies were used to analyze all news headlines. The findings showed that ten rhetorical devices were found in these headlines. Alliteration was used most frequently, following closely behind were metonymy, rhyme, rhetorical question, depersonalization, hyperbole, metaphor, pun, cliché, and euphemism. Both alliteration and metonymy were frequently used in the headlines of the news stories. However, just simile and allusion were found in the Tehran Times headlines, but not with high frequency. The findings can provide insights into the understanding of rhetoric-specific conventions in news headlines for ELT teachers and students. Also, English teachers can use news headlines as authentic teaching materials in their language classrooms.

Vision 3 vis-à-vis Learning to Read: A Taxonomy-Based and Teacher-Oriented Evaluation of Reading Comprehension Skill(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

Reading passages act as the locus of comprehensible input in the English language teaching materials and are mostly followed by a host of activities to ensure the learners’ comprehension. The current study aimed to carry out a comparative evaluation of Vision 3 and Learning to Read (i.e., English for Pre-university Students) in terms of the reading sections. To this end, Freeman’s taxonomy of reading comprehension questions was used. To enrich the quantitative data, thirty-two English teachers were also interviewed. The results revealed the prevalence of Language questions in both textbooks. However, the least common types of questions were Affect and Content in the old and new textbook, respectively. The results of Chi-square tests unfolded a significant difference between the two textbooks in terms of three categories of questions. The analysis of the teachers’ responses corroborated the findings of the quantitative phase. The teachers seemed satisfied with the inclusion of more Affect questions in Vision 3; nevertheless, they believed that the new English textbook needed to be revised in terms of the quantity and quality of reading texts and tasks in order to shape and expand the students’ reading comprehension skills. The findings carry pedagogical implications for the materials developers and English teachers.
