گرچه مطالعات زیادی به تحقیق درباره چکیده مقالات تحقیقی اختصاص یافته است اما هنوز پژوهش های زیادی لازم است تا رابطه میان نقشهای بلاغی و عناصر زبانشناختی آنها را آشکار کند (مثلا فراگفتمان). برای بررسی این رابطه‚ مطالعه کنونی 60 چکیده انگلیسی را مورد تجزیه و تحلیل قرارداده است که توسط دو گروه فرهنگی انگلیسی زبان و فارسی زبان نگاشته شده است. در مرحله اول‚ ساختار بلاغی چکیده ها بر اساس مدل هایلند (2000) بررسی می شود. سپس عناصر فراگفتمان با کمک مدل حرکت هایلند a)2005 ) تعیین می گردد. ما الگوهای متفاوتی را در هر دو گروه فرهنگی مشاهده کردیم. در گروه انگلیسی زبانان چکیده ها بیشتر با مدل هایلند (2000) سازگار بودند. در حالیکه فارسی زبانان ترجیح می دهند بعضی از این حرکتها ها را حذف کنند همچنین نتایج نشان دادند که یک رابطه نزدیک میان نقش ارتباطی حرکتها ها و انتخاب فراگفتمان در هرحرکت وجود دارد. بر اساس یافته های این مطالعه می توان گفت که عناصر فراگفتمان برای ایجاد ارتباط موثر با خواننده تغییر می یابند. این مطالعه می تواند کاربردهای آموزشی ارزنده ای برای حوزه های EAP/ESP مخصوصا دوره های نگارش در بر داشته باشد.

در سایه توسعه مفهوم فراگفتمان، امروزه به این درک رسیده ایم که نوشتار علمی صرفا به داد و ستد معانی محتوایی نمی پردازد: آنچه که از طریق گفتمان علمی داد و ستد می شود به شدت با تبادل معانی اجتماعی و بین فردی در پیوند است. بر اساس این دیدگاه، مطالعه حاضر با استفاده از الگوی ارائه شده توسط تنگ و جان در سال 1999 به بررسی ویژگیهای ذکر خویش در کتب علمی نوشته شده توسط استفان هاوکینگ پرداخته است. یافته های این تحقیق نشان می دهد که از میان نقش های شناسایی شده توسط تنگ و جان، نقش بازنماگر پر تکرارترین نقش ذکر خود در گفتمان استفات هاوکینگ را تشکیل می دهد. بر اساس تعریف ارائه شده از این نقش چنین نتیجه گیری شده است که این دانشمند ، پذیرش اجتماعی استدلال های خویش را به عنوان یکی از مهمترین ابزارهای متقاعد نمودن خوانندگان خویش تلقی می نماید.

این تحقیق به بررسی کمی و کارکردی اشاره به خود در پایان نامه های کارشناسی ارشد در علوم نرم می پردازد. یکی از اهداف مهم این تخقیق یافتن کارکرد اشاره به خود در در پایان نامه های کارشناسی ارشد در علوم نرم بود. بدین منظور، بیست پایان نامه کارشناسی ارشد در علوم نرم ، در چهار رشته ی دانشگاهی به طور تصادفی از کتابخانه های چهار دانشگاه طراز اول انتخاب شدند. در هر رشته دانشگاهی، پنج مورد در بازه ی زمانی هفت سال (2014-2007) انتخاب شدند. این تحقیق، صرفا بخش مباحثه پایان نامه ها را مورد بررسی قرار داد. بررسی کمی این نوشته جات نشان داد که فراوانی انواع مختلف عناصر اشاره به خود، در علوم نرم کاملا متفاوت می باشد. میان این عناصر، ضمیر ""من"" با فراوانی 49 ، پر کاربردترین ضمیر اول شخص بود. همچنین این عناصر اشاره به خود، به طور کارکردی، براساس طبقه بندی نقش ضمایر شخصی در کلام Tang and John(1999)، مورد تجزیه وتحلیل قرار گرفتند. یافته های تحقیق حاضر، از بعد کارکردی نشان داد که پر کاربردترین نقش کلامی عناصر اشاره به خود در این نوشته جاتRecounter of research process وکمکاربردترین Originator بود.

Despite widespread interest and research among applied linguists to explore metadiscourse use, very little is known of how metadiscourse resources have evolved over time in response to the historically developing practices of academic communities. Motivated by such an ambition, the current research drew on a corpus of 874315 words taken from three leading journals of applied linguistics in order to trace the diachronic evolution of stance markers in methodology section of research articles from 1996 to 2016. Hyland’s (2005b) model of metadiscourse was adopted for the analysis of the selected corpus. The data were explored using concordance software AntConc (Anthony, 2011). Moreover, a Chi-Square statistical measure was run to determine statistical significances. The analysis revealed a significant decline in the overall frequency of stance markers in methodology section of RAs. Interestingly, this decrease was entirely due to the overall decline in the use of self-mentions. Approaching interactional dimension of academic writing from such a diachronic perspective, it might be argued that the very selective use of stance markers by academic writers over time means metadiscourse does not operate in vacuum and is sensitive to changes within disciplines and their academic practices.

Since the early development of interest in the interpersonal dimensions of academic communication in the 1980s, the analytic potentials of the concept of metadiscourse have motivated a large number of investigations. Although these analytic potentials have facilitated the study of diverse academic genres, there has always been a risk of detachment of textual analyses form the contextual origins and motivations. In some cases, this detachment has been so observable that the true discoursal nature of the interpersonal dimensions of academic communication has been reduced to classifications of a large number of pure textual properties. As a reaction to this reductionist trend, the present article provides a preliminary framework within which the contextual origins of metadiscourse features can be understood. It is suggested that if the findings of metadiscourse research are meant to be interpreted in meaningful ways, they should be contextualized within such process-oriented frameworks.

The present study aimed to investigate whether Reports on the results and Comments on the results moves’ recycling in the Research Article (RA) Discussion sections is affected by cultural/disciplinary variations. To this end, 600 empirical RAs in six Soft Science disciplines, including Economics, Sociology, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, Management, and Psychology, with an equal number in each discipline and culture, published in the period from 2006 to 2018 were selected. Weissberg and Buker’s (1990) move model was used as a starting point to analyze the RAs. First, the Reports on the results and Comments on the results moves were identified in the Results sections. The Chi-Square test was then used to calculate and compare the frequency of their recycling in the Discussion sections across cultures and disciplines. The data analysis results revealed that changes in the disciplines or sociocultural settings do not result in variations in recycling the two moves under study. Given that the current study provides a relatively new framework for scrutinizing scientific discourse, it may promise certain pedagogical implications for native and non-native students in Soft Science disciplines, researchers, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructors, and course designers.

This contrastive study was conducted to contrastively analyze English and Farsi newspaper opinion columns in terms of the frequency of different types of stance markers.60 newspaper opinion columns (30 written in English and 30 written in Farsi) from 10 wide spread newspapers published in the United States and Iran in 2015 were analyzed. Hyland’s (2005) model of stance markers (hedges, boosters, attitude markers, and self-mention) was used as the framework of analysis.The findings revealed that hedges and self-mentions used by English columnists were considerably more frequent than those employed by the Farsi columnists. In contrast, Farsi columnists used large number of boosters and attitude markers. Although, attitude markers were in the last position of sub-categories of stance markers in both corpora.Generally, it could be concluded that the similarities and differences among columnists could be related to the cultural and linguistic preferences of the writers in languages. This study could be beneficial for EFL students and teachers in understanding intercultural linguistic problems in language use, and could be used to lead to creative reading and writing in journalism and ESP courses.

Male and Female EFL Learners’ Perception of Free Riding Tendency

Free riding behavior or not contributing equally in group work, is a common obstacle in many cooperative activities in language learning. The present study aimed at comparing male and female EFL learners' attitude and their free riding tendency to use the benefits of lowering free riding behaviors in order to make group work more influential in language learning. To this purpose, 140 intermediate and upper intermediate Iranian EFL learners and 30 teachers participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used to investigate the topic. The obtained results revealed that the female learners act better in reducing free riding behaviors. The results further revealed a positive perception of interpersonal activities at both level of language proficiency-- intermediate and upper-intermediate. Actually, the obtained results showed that the intermediate group (males and females) acted more positively than the other group in this respect. The findings of the study bear some implications and suggestions for scholar interested in the topic of this.

افزایش محبوبیت کار گروهی در کلاسهای زبان خارجی با افزایش تعداد گزارشات زبان آموزانی که به همان اندازه در کارگروهی مشارکت نداشته اند همراه بوده است. تأثیر این رفتار بر سایر اعضای گروه که به عنوان گروه ناپذیری شناخته می شود، می تواند کار گروهی را به یک تجربه ناخوشایند تبدیل کند. این مطالعه با توجه به تئوری انتخاب عقلانی و نظریه فرهنگی اجتماعی، میزان توانایی زبان آموزان خارجی را برای همکاری گروهی موثر بررسی کرده است. به این منظور، در مجموع ۱۴۰ زبان آموز شامل ۷۰ نفر در سطح متوسط و ۷۰ نفر در سطح پیشرفته به انجام روایت گویی شفاهی مبتنی بر تصویر شرکت کردند. معلم ضمن آشنا کردن فراگیران با اصول نظریه انتخاب عقلانی و کار گروهی موثر و با مشاهده کلاسها و عملکرد فراگیران پرسشنامه گروه ناپذیری را پر کردند. نتایج تحقیق، تاثیر شناخت تئوری انتخاب عقلانی در کاهش گروه ناپذیری را تایید کرد. علاوه بر این ، تجزیه و تحلیل کیفی مشاهدات بیانگر این است که فراگیران به ویژه آنهایی که در سطح متوسط هستند بیشتر به عدم همکاری در گروه تمایل دارند. همچنین دلایل زمینه ساز نداشتن علاقه فراگیران به کار گروهی و راهکارهای احتمالی برای کاهش این نگرانی مشخص شد. پیشنهاد می شود : معلمان اهداف فعالیتهای گروه را با توجه به تئوری انتخاب عقلانی به روشنی بیان کنند و اهداف خاص دوره را روشن کنند. با داشتن یک نظر شفاف در مورد اهداف دوره و درک نقش معلمان و فراگیران در کارهای گروهی، فراگیران در موقعیت بهتری قرار می گیرند.

Although a plethora of research endeavors have investigated the rhetorical structure of the Research Articles (RAs) through the lens of move analysis, Move Recycling (MR) across RA sections has remained unnoticed. The current study sought to bridge this gap by exploring cross-disciplinary variations in the recycling of the Objective move (research questions/hypotheses/purposes) across four conventional sections (Introduction, Method, Result, and Discussion) of RAs. To this end, 600 English RAs from four prestigious journals in six soft science disciplines, published between 2006 and 2018, were selected. The quantitative data analysis results revealed that the Objective move’s recycling was sensitive to the disciplinary variations and RA sections. That is, Economics RAs were the main platforms for recycling the Objective move, and Psychology RAs witnessed the least amount of its recycling. Moreover, Objective move recycling was observed most frequently in the Discussion sections and least frequently in the Method sections of RAs. In the study’s qualitative phase, the RA authors’ rationales for MR, which were received via email, underwent content analysis. Based on the recurrent themes in the RA authors’ responses, four main reasons for MR, including editorial policy, readers’ guidance, discipline conventions, and RA length, were identified. This study’s findings might provide a concise view of MR for researchers, teachers, and students in various disciplines. EAP instructors can raise students’ awareness of MR and encourage them to use it in their RAs as a comprehension facilitator.

The well-established affiliation of metadiscourse research tradition to the philosophy of ESP raises some inevitable expectations on how much and how well the concept has been geared to meet the practical necessities of academic writing pedagogy. In light of such an expectation, a corpus of 35 academic writing coursebooks published during the last three decades were evaluated in terms of the possible realizations of key resources of interaction in pedagogical tasks. Due to its theoretical rigor and analytically operationalized nature, Hyland’s model of metadiscourse (2005a) was taken as the guiding framework for the current evaluation. The quantitative findings emerging from the analysis of the corpus did not sound sufficiently promising, suggesting that that theoretical developments have not yet been ideally translated into pedagogical designs; however, the rich range of resources identified in the tasks (i.e. the fifty five categories emerging from the evaluation of the corpus) suggest that the rigorous tradition of research in metadiscourse has contributed to the effective operationalization of the concept for pedagogical objectives. It has been argued that through the effective introduction of the concept of metadiscourse into pedagogical designs and its appropriate operationalization, novice participants of academic/scientific discourse communities would be enabled to redefine the nature of academic communication and get rid of a large number of misconceptions which have become fossilized through long years of the dominance of a positivistic thinking.

Critical cultural awareness (CCA) as an essential element of intercultural competence has attracted a myriad of scholars in the fields of language teaching, communication studies, cultural studies, gender studies, ethnic studies among others. That is why this study aims to investigate the attitudes of Iranian high school teachers and learners toward critical cultural awareness. The participants of the study included 307 teachers and 359 learners in different high schools in Qazvin. All the participants filled out the Critical Cultural Awareness Questionnaire. The data were then fed into SPSS software and were subjected to Principal Components Analysis. Three factors were extracted and named as CCA in ELT Programs, CCA in ELT Textbooks and Materials, and CCA in General Terms. The participants’ responses were analyzed based on these factors. The results of item analysis revealed that both teachers and learners indicated that all cultures should be equally addressed in ELT textbooks and materials. It was also concluded that the teachers' and learners’ awareness regarding the integration of culture into the mainstream teaching should be raised and they should put more emphasis on culture in their classes. One significant implication for EFL teachers and also syllabus designers is that an intercultural curriculum can enable learners to understand the target materials more efficiently.

This study was an attempt to investigate the perception of Iranian senior high school teachers toward critical cultural awareness. The participants of the study comprised of 307 teachers in different high schools in Qazvin. All the participants filled in the Critical Cultural Awareness Questionnaire. The data were then fed into SPSS software and were subjected to Principal Components Analysis. Three factors were extracted and named as CCA in ELT Programs, CCA in ELT Textbooks and Materials, and CCA in General Terms, and the participants’ responses were analyzed based on these factors. The results indicated that the teachers’ critical awareness perception toward ELT Textbooks and Materials was the highest factor. The results of the item analysis revealed that teachers indicate all cultures should have an equal status in ELT textbooks and materials. It was concluded that the teachers’ cultural awareness regarding the integration of culture into mainstream teaching should be raised and they should pay more attention to culture in their classes. One significant implication of this study for EFL teachers and also syllabus designers is that an intercultural curriculum can enable learners to have a better understanding of the target materials.

It is assumed that web-based dynamic assessment will continue to thrive and have a profound role in pedagogy. In this regard, explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was selected to consider the effect of web-based dynamic assessment on learners' autonomy. To this end, a sample of 60 male EFL learners at high school were chosen at non-random and categorized into two groups of web-based dynamic assessment and the control group based on the convenience sampling method. the learners’ autonomy questionnaire was used as a data gathering tool for pretest and posttest in autonomy. The high school students exposed to web-based DA via a designed web based on the level and requirements of the students in grammar, however, the learners in the control group learned the grammar by the traditional or conventional method of instruction. Based on the results of Mann-Whitney U test, the learners’ autonomy means scores in web-based DA increased in comparison to those of the control group. The platform and methods employed in this study produce results that are encouraging for the field of language instruction and could produce motivational outcomes in the future. Due to its theoretical rigor and analytically operationalized nature, Hyland’s model of metadiscourse (2005a) was taken as the guiding framework for the current evaluation. The quantitative findings emerging from the analysis of the corpus did not sound sufficiently promising, suggesting that those theoretical developments have not yet been ideally translated into pedagogical designs; however, the rich range of resources identified in the tasks (i.e., the 55 categories emerging from the evaluation of the corpus) suggest that the rigorous tradition of research in metadiscourse has contributed to the effective operationalization of the concept for pedagogical objectives. It has been argued that through the effective introduction of the concept of metadiscourse into pedagogical designs and its appropriate operationalization, novice participants of academic/scientific discourse communities would be enabled to redefine the nature of academic communication and get rid of a large number of misconceptions which have become fossilized through long years of the dominance of positivistic thinking.

Numerous academics in the domains of language instruction, cultural studies, communication studies, ethnic studies, gender studies, etc. have focused on critical cultural awareness (CCA) as a crucial element of intercultural competency. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether the cultural elements in Iranian high school coursebooks (Vision Series) have been (un)touched by the ministry of education. To this end, the conversation contents of the Vision Series (levels 1-3) were examined by the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to evaluate possible intercultural competence used in Vision Series. It was found that the content was biased toward the source culture in general. Finally, some ideal ways of presenting culture in the coursebooks were put forward in the form of a cultural rubric. The pedagogical implications of this study are discussed.

این مطالعه کیفی/غیرخطی با فن گرانددتئوری و ترکیبی از دیگر فنون توصیفی/ تحلیلی در سیاقی "هولوگرامیکال (روابط متقابل خرد/ کلان) ساخت یافته؛ این ساخت در منطقی پست مدرن، اگرچه از خصلت مرکزگریزی برخوردار است؛ اما به لحاظ پارادایمی حول محور مفهومی فلسفه زبان هایدگر (خانه هستی)، به شیوه مورد پژوهانه سازمان یافته؛ واحد مشاهده، توصیف/ تحلیل،"سیاق زیست زبانی پهلوی دوم" است. با استناد به منابع اولیه و ثانویه متعدد و "نمونه گیری هدفمند/ نظری"، در فرایندی از سرگذشت پژوهی؛ به کژکارکردهائی از سیاق زیست پهلوی در "بازی زبانی توسعه"رسیده؛ یافته های نظری پسینی زیر (استنباطات /مقوله بندی ها به روش "منفصلِ برساخته از متن") از آرای صاحب نظرانی اخذ ؛ و در ترکیب/ تلفیقی بدیع، طبق منطق پست مدرن با سیاقی ریزوماتیک (هریک در ارتباطی مستقیم با مقوله پیشین) به کار بسته شده است : "عدم شجاعت بودنِ پهلوی در و با زبان زهدانخانه ایران"؛ "عدم پیوند شاه با ساخت زبانی/فرهنگی ایران" ؛ ناهمخوانی"سلوک اخلاقی" (به مفهوم وبری) ناشی از سیاق زیست زبانی شاه با "توسعه اندیشی/کوشی". از سوی دیگر، مسائل فوق در نسبتی با کلیت تخریباتِ ساختیِ آریاگرائی (ضدیت زبانی/فرهنگی)، و کژکارکردهای آن قرار دارد که بدان تحت عنوان ابداعی "ناجامعه گشتگی" اشاره شده است. مسائل فوق الذکر، به همراه عاملیت تام الاختیار شاه در امور و خصلت"ابراز شخصیت" (به مفهوم پوپری) در بازی های زبانی (توسعه و ...) ضدیتی تام با توسعه کوشی وی داشت. این مطالعه در امتداد پرسش های افلاطون (چه کسی باید حکومت کند؟) و پوپر (چگونه باید حکومت کرد؟)؛ به منزله سومین پرسش برای مطالعات "توسعه و مسائل آن" پیشنهاد می شود : "در چه نسبتی با زبان زهدانخانه برای بازی توسعه باید کوشید؟" در سپهری از همین پرسش با طرح "صورت/سیرت" برای توسعه ، به نظر می رسد "سکونت در زبان "، صورت توسعه کوشی را به سیرت خلاقانه آن متصل نموده؛ به همراه انرژی های حاصل از "شجاعت بودن"، "سلوک اخلاقی ناشی از سیاق زیست زبانی" و ... بر شانس پدیداری توسعه می افزاید.

در کنار جنبه های شناختی یادگیری زبان، سایر عوامل می توانند شکست/موفقیت عمومی آموزش زبان را توضیح دهند. بدلیل کم توجهی به عوامل عاطفی در یادگیری زبان، بررسی این عوامل امری دشوار بنظر می رسد. محققان حوزه روانشناسی در مطالعات روانشناختی خود در مقایسه با احساسات مثبت بیشتر احساسات منفی مانند غم و عصبانیت را نظر گرفته اند و این عناصر را در ارتباط با زبان آموزان مورد بررسی قرار داده اند. از این رو، نقش عواطف مثبت به اندازه کافی مورد بررسی قرار نگرفته است، به ویژه در مورد مدرسان زبان انگلیسی. پژوهش حاضر با میانجیگری جنسیت و تجربه تدریس سعی در بررسی تأثیر بهزیستی بر خودپنداره و توسعه حرفه ای دارد. بدین منظور 220 مدرس زبان انگلیسی مرد و زن مقطع مهارتی پیشرفته با حداقل 5 سال سابقه بر اساس نمونه گیری در دسترس انتخاب شدند. ابزارها شامل پرسشنامه بهزیستی PERMA توسعه یافته توسط باتلر و کرن (2016)، توسعه حرفه ای (PD) طراحی شده توسط افشار و قاسمی (2018) و پرسشنامه خودپنداره رابسون (SCQ) تهیه شده توسط رابسون (1989) بود. پایایی (ضریب آلفای کرونباخ) و روایی (روایی محتوایی) پرسشنامه ها تضمین شد. داده های جمع آوری شده بر اساس تحلیل همبستگی و مدل سازی معادلات ساختاری (SEM) با استفاده از SPSS 24.0 و Amos 8 مورد تجزیه و تحلیل قرار گرفت. نتایج نشان دادند که هیچ رابطه ساختاری معناداری بین بهزیستی و توسعه حرفه ای با میانجیگری جنسیت و تجربه تدریس وجود ندارد. یافته های این پژوهش پیامدهای نظری و عملی مهمی برای معلمان، روانشناسان مدارس، مربیان معلمان، طراحان برنامه درسی و پژوهشگران دارد.

Abstract The necessity of using online education during the Coronal virus pandemic and the barriers created by the absence of face-to-face instruction has shifted the researchers’ focus to web-based instruction and assessment. In this regard, an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was selected to consider the effects of web-based dynamic assessment (DA) on learners' grammar accuracy, autonomy, and attitudes. To this end, a convenient sample of 60 male English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners was chosen and categorized into two groups of web-based dynamic assessment and a control group. The data collection tools were a pretest and posttest of grammar, a pretest and posttest of autonomy, and a semi-structured interview. The participants were exposed to web-based DA via a designed web based on the level and the students’ needs in grammar, whereas the learners in the control group learned the grammar through the traditional method of instruction. Based on the results of ANCOVA and Mann-Whitney U test, the learners’ grammar accuracy and autonomy mean scores in web-based DA increased compared to those of the control group. In addition, the results of interview showed that the learners had a positive attitude toward web-based dynamic assessment treatment. The results of the semi-structured interview with the experimental group verified the quantitative results. The platform and methods employed in this study suggest encouraging implications for the field of language instruction which will be discussed.
