نقش و جایگاه ادوارد گرانویل براون در ایران پژوهی (با تأکید بر کتاب تاریخ ادبیات ایران)

چکیده
ادوارد گرانویل براون، شرق شناس انگلیسی آثار متعددی در زمینه مطالعات مربوط به ایران دارد که در این میان می توان به کتاب تاریخ ادبیات اشاره کرد. این اثر که خود تحت تأثیر شرق شناسان بزرگ اروپایی و شیوه های آن تدوین شده بود، بعدها در ایران سرمشق تاریخ ادبیات نویسان فارسی شد. هدف از این نوشتار بازگو نمودن نقش وی در ایران پژوهی است. از دید عالمان و محققان ادبی مقام وی به عنوان یک شرق شناس دوستدار فرهنگ مردم ایران ستودنی است. گسترده نگری ادوارد بروان در زمینه ایران شناسی از یک سو و تکیه بر روایت و اسناد تاریخی از سوی دیگر سبب شده تا نظرها درباره وی گوناگون باشد؛ برخی وی را نقد می کنند و برخی دیگر وی را می ستایند. در این جستار که با روش کتابخانه ای انجام شده است، نویسنده نخست به معرفی کوتاهی از براون می پردازد و سپس نقش وی در ایران پژوهی را با تأکید بر کتاب تاریخ ادبیات ایران مطالعه و بررسی می کند تا جایگاه او از دید عالمان ادبی مشخص شود. یافته های پژوهش حاضر نشان می دهد در میان شرق شناسانی که به موضوع ایران پرداخته اند، براون سهم بسزایی در شناساندن ایران و ادبیات آن به اروپاییان دارد و اینکه بعد از چاپ این کتاب محققان ایرانی روش تاریخ نگاری روایی و رجالی صرف را در پژوهش های ادبی خود کنار گذاشتند و روشی را در پیش گرفتند که براون آن را در تاریخ ادبیات خود به کار گرفته بود.Role and Place of Edward Granville Browne in Iranian Studies (with an Emphasis on A Literary History of Persia)
Edward Granville Browne, the British Orientalist, wrote several books in the field of Iranian studies, among which reference can be made to his A Literary History of Persia. This work which had been written under the influence of great European Orientalists and their methods was later used as a model for the writers of books on history of literature. This paper discusses the role of Edward Granville Browne in Iranian studies. In the view of literary scholarly and researchers, his attempts as an Orientalists and lover of Iranian culture are praiseworthy. His comprehensive view of Iranology, on the one hand, and his reliance on historical narratives and documents, on the other hand, have given rise to various views regarding his works; some people criticize him, while some others admire him. In this study, which has been conducted following the library method, the writer initially introduces Browne briefly and, then, investigates his role in Iranian studies with an emphasis on his A Literary History of Persiain order to determine his status in the view of literary scholars. The findings of the study demonstrate that, among the Orientalists who dealt with Iran, Browne had a great share in introducing Iran and Iranian literature to Europeans. They also indicate that, afterthe publication of this book, Iranian researchers abandoned their methods of purelynarrative and biographical historiography in their literary studies and adopted themethod that Browne had employed in the composition of A Literary History of Persia.
