The purpose of the present study was two-fold: (a) First, it examined fairness of Special English Test (SET) of Iranian National University Entrance Exam (INUEE) by analyzing Differential Item Functioning (DIF) with reading comprehension section of this test (b) second, it explored test takers’ attitudes towards possible sources of unfairness and DIF. In the quantitative part of the study the data from 10000 test takers (6820 females and 3180 males) were analyzed for gender DIF using Mantel-Haenszel (MH) technique. It was revealed that only 6 items in the reading comprehension skill showed DIF. Further analysis manifested that the effect size of DIF for all six items were category A or negligible. Moreover, qualitative interview results indicated that learners generally considered the test a fair one while some potential sources of bias such as topic familiarity, multiple-choice format of the test, topic interest, passage length, and complex structure of test items were mentioned.
The Relationship Between Ethical Leadership with the Organizational Citizenship Behavior and the School Principals’ Performance(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزه های تخصصی:
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the ethical leadership with organizational citizenship behavior and the school principals’ performance (Case study: elementary schools in Tehran) in the academic year of 2017-2018. Methodology: The research method was applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-correlation in terms of the data collection. The population consisted of all 1353 elementary school principals in Tehran; 298 people (159 female principals and 139 male principals), were used as sample size using Morgan table and a stratified random sampling. The method of data collection was based on three questionnaires: Ethical Leadership Standard Questionnaire by De Hoogh & Den Hartog (2008), Organizational Citizenship Behavior Standard Questionnaire by Podsakoff et al. (1990), and Principals’ Performance Questionnaire by Patterson (1992; translated by Shekarshekan & Arsهادی, 2007). The reliability of this questionnaire was calculated more than 0.7 using Cronbach's alpha method for all dimensions of the questionnaire, which indicates the reliability of the research instrument. Content validity and construct validity were used to calculate the validity. The results indicated the validity of the research instrument. The data analysis was performed using SPSS-22 software in a significant level of 0.05 and in two descriptive and inferential parts (Pearson correlation coefficient test and single-variable and multiple-variable regression analysis). Findings: The results of data analysis showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between ethical leadership with the organizational citizenship behavior and principals’ performance; in other words, the principals’ performance increased with the increase of organizational citizenship behavior; also, the principals’ performance increased with the increase of ethical leadership. Conclusion: The predictive components of "fairness", "transparency of role" and "power sharing" have the potential to predict the organizational citizenship behavior and the principals’ performance.
Human Rights as Fairness: A Common Ground for the Integration of Religious and Human Rights Commitments(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزه های تخصصی:
The guiding question of this paper is “How can, if at all, the universality of human rights survive critical examinations within the prevailing multiculturalist frame of reference?” This paper examines the possibility conditions of critically reasoning for the universality of human rights. The discussions in this paper runs at two levels of analysis. At the conceptual level, a theoretical monist-pluralist frame of reference will be developed to reformulate the problematic of the universality of human rights in a form more compatible methodologically with multiculturalist approaches in the humanities, social sciences and current discourses of cultural studies. Demonstrating the weaknesses of the alternative solutions, the main hypothesis of this study suggests to refer to a reconstructed version of the “golden rule of reciprocal fairness.” At the practical level, this paper will set forth three “why”, “which”, and “how” questions regarding those principles which can bolster a universal reception of the human rights as fairness.
Examining the Fairness of the University Entrance Exam: A Latent Class Analysis Approach to Differential Item Functioning(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

حوزه های تخصصی:
Measurement has been ubiquitous in all areas of education for at least a century. Various methods have been suggested to examine the fairness of education tests especially in high-stakes contexts. The present study has adopted the newly proposed ecological approach to differential item functioning (DIF) to investigate the fairness of the Iranian nationwide university entrance exam. To this end, the actual data from an administration of the test were obtained and analyzed through both traditional logistic regression and latent class analysis (LCA) techniques. The initial DIF analysis through logistic regression revealed that 19 items (out of 70) showed either uniform or non-uniform DIF. Further examination of the sample through LCA showed that the sample is not homogeneous. LCA class enumeration revealed that three classes can be identified in the sample. DIF analysis for separate latent classes showed that three serious differences in the number of DIF items identified in each latent class ranging from zero items in latent class 3 to 43 items in latent class 2. The inclusion of the covariates in the model also showed that latent class membership could be significantly predicted from high school GPA, field of study, and acceptance quota. It is argued that the fairness of the test might be under question. The implications of the findings for the validity of the test are discussed in detail.
Fairness in Classroom Language Assessment from EFL Teachers' Perspective(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزه های تخصصی:
The significance of fairness in assessment is not a subject of doubt for educationalists even with fundamentally contrastive perspectives, but the study of methodological means for safeguarding this concept in educational classroom contexts has only received the scant attention of the researchers and educationalists. On this basis, this study intended to conceptualize foreign language (FL) classroom assessment fairness from EFL teachers' perspective. For this purpose and as a part of a larger enterprise, the researchers first strived for the creation and validation of a Classroom Assessment Fairness Scale (CAFS). This process was informed by the related literature and applied a critical incident technique. To verify the scale's validity and reliability, it was first expert viewed and modified accordingly; next pilot-tested on a group of 250 teachers, and finally, the amassed data were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factorial analyses and internal consistency measures. The validated scale was taken by 120 Iranian EFL teachers. Descriptive analyses indicated that the EFL teachers were familiar with fairness principles in classroom assessment practices. They were aware of the significance of the opportunity to learn, the opportunity to demonstrate learning, the no-harm principle, the constructive classroom environment, and transparency as the constructive elements of classroom assessment practices' fairness. However, the same familiarity and awareness were not guaranteed for the score pollution component. The results further demonstrated that the teachers' gender, educational degree, teaching experience, and teaching context led to statistically significant differences among EFL teachers' attitudes to classroom assessment fairness.
Intersectionality in Second Language Education and the Birth of a New Term(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

حوزه های تخصصی:
Intersectionality refers to the experience of multi-faceted emotions from diverse angles (Crenshaw, 1989). This concept, originally developed in Western studies, has been applied to critical pedagogy, which concerns minority individuals in educational or vocational settings. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the concept of intersectionality in Second Language (L2) education and propose a new term for the main concept. Recent research has encouraged the use of quantitative and mixed-methods designs for measuring intersectionality. As such, the new term "discrima," derived from the Latin word "discrimen" meaning discrimination, is proposed to refer to the emotion experienced after discrimination. Intersectionality is used to pave the way for further steps in quantifying the intersectionality line of research. This study also explores what intersectionality is, where it originates, where it occurs in L2 education, and whether the concept can effectively express what should be expressed. The implications of this research are relevant to educational policymakers and course designers who can use the concept in real-world settings. Emphasizing the emotional aspects of intersectionality may help prevent unpleasant L2 learning and teaching experiences for minority groups. Therefore, this new term may facilitate promoting L2 education internationally. It would be beneficial for future research to provide more details about the significance of the new term "discrima" in measuring intersectionality and to offer examples of how the concept of intersectionality can be applied in L2 education.
Ethics and Law: The Place of Fairness in Fair Proceedings(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
Introduction: Justice and fairness are two basic moral concepts in law. All judges, in the performance of their judicial duties, have faced the demands of issuing "just" and "fair" verdicts many times, without perhaps paying attention to the meanings of justice and fairness. Therefore, in the present study, the place of fairness in fair proceedings has been examined. Materials and Methods: The current review is descriptive and analytical and based on a library study. Conclusion: The rule of fairness, which is the purpose of this research, means considering the circumstances and conditions of the case and involving them in giving the appropriate decision. In the Roman, Germanic and Common law legal systems, fairness is a concept that entered these systems from the past and means a decision based on the judge's conscience. In the common law system, equity is one of the sources of rights; However, fairness is not stated as a rule in Iranian law, and some jurists have proposed it as a source of law that is not written. On the other hand, this concept also has the characteristics of a legal rule and has many applications in law, so it can also be a legal rule
EFL Learners' Perceptions of Fairness in Classroom Assessment and their Cognitive Test Anxiety
حوزه های تخصصی:
Earlier research has shown that fair assessment plays a crucial role in the classroom and is closely associated with students' academic success. Besides, multiple studies have consistently indicated that the cognitive aspect of test anxiety significantly and meaningfully influences test performance, highlighting the connection between test anxiety and academic achievement. Therefore, this correlational study was done to investigate the relationship between Iranian EFL learners' perceptions of fairness in classroom assessment and their cognitive test anxiety. It followed a quantitative method and a total number of 201 learners, 88 males along with 113 females, participated in the present study voluntarily. A convenience and random-sampling method were applied, using fair assessment and cognitive test anxiety questionnaire. The results of the study, using Pearson-moment correlation and Regression analysis, revealed that there was no significant relationship between Iranian EFL learners' perceptions of fairness in classroom assessment and their cognitive test anxiety. It also indicated no significant difference between male and female learners' perceptions of fairness in classroom assessment and their cognitive test anxiety. The findings of the study can be implemented in educational systems by teachers, learners, programmers, and researchers. It can be considered as a guideline for teachers, especially EFL teachers in academic environments to find solutions for the problems and difficulties in the fairness of classroom assessment.
Exploring the Validity of Applied Linguistics’ Ph.D. Program Admission Interviews in Iranian Universities: A Validity Argument Approach
حوزه های تخصصی:
Using Kane's interpretive argument model and Messick's validity argument approach, this study rigorously examined faculty and PhD candidate’s perspectives on PhD admission interviews in Iranian universities. We interviewed 10 professors and PhD interviewees which provided comprehensive insight into nuanced perspectives. We conducted rigorous content analysis to identify prevalent themes, forming a strong foundation for our analysis. This study emphasizes the vital requirement for standardized evaluation criteria, robust support systems, and an enhanced interview process to ensure fair and inclusive admission systems. Additionally, our development of guidelines based on Toulmin's reasoning model underscores the originality of our contribution and its potential to benefit stakeholders and the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology (MSRT) in Iran. The findings highlighted the importance of standardized criteria, support, and a stronger interview process for fairness and inclusivity in selecting PhD candidates. Faculty stressed clear guidelines to remove subjectivity, while candidates voiced concerns about unclear expectations and proposed added support like mentoring and preparation programs. Based on Toulmin's reasoning model, the study crafted validity argument guidelines for this context. As a result, these proposed changes will impact stakeholders and the MSRT by enhancing the PhD candidate evaluation process and ensuring a fairness and inclusivity. This study provides valuable insights to improve PhD admission procedures at Iranian universities by integrating standardized criteria, enhancing support mechanisms, and fostering fairness in decision-making.
Investigating Gender DIF in the Reading Comprehension Section of the B2 First Exam
حوزه های تخصصی:
Construct-irrelevant variance is considered as a major threat to validity which indicates the existence of additional unrelated variables that distort the meaning of test scores and cause the test to be biased. Differential item functioning (DIF) analysis is an important technique in examining the validity and fairness of educational tests. Concerning the importance of test fairness in large-scale exams, this study aimed to (1) detect gender DIF in the reading comprehension section of the B2 First exam using the Rasch model and Mantel-Haenszel method, and (2) investigate the comparability of results from the two DIF detection techniques. To this end, the reading section of the B2 First exam was administered to 207 undergraduate students of English as a foreign language (EFL). After checking the fit of the data to the Rasch model, the results of the Rasch model-based DIF analysis showed the presence of two items indicating DIF, whereas the results of Mantel-Haenszel showed that there were three gender-DIF items.
