The present study was conducted to investigate how Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from Iran’s nuclear deal on May 8, 2018 has been framed in political cartoons published in French and Iranian media. In this paper, a thematic analysis of published cartoons available on Google images from May 8, 2018 to June 8, 2018 was conducted in both French and Farsi. Five categories of news frames identified by Semetko and Valkenburg (2002) were applied on selected cartoons to observe how these frames are used on political cartoons in French and Iranian news outlets. Findings of the study showed that withdrawal of Trump from Iran’s nuclear deal has been framed mostly as a threat for France and has been considered in a bilateral perspective between USA and France. For the Iranian press the withdrawal is mostly considered as a result of Trump’s mental instability and P5+1 inaction.

Cette recherche s’est intéressée à l’étude de l’une des représentations du contact de l’anglais avec le parler français québécois, à savoir la question des emprunts et plus précisément les mots et expressions calqués sur les mots anglais. Notre recherche s’est penchée sur un corpus constitué du contenu de deux titres de la presse écrite francophone au Québec, le quotidien Le Journal de Montréal et Le Soleil, pendant la période d’un an, afin d’y repérer les occurrences des calques à l’anglais dans le cadre d’une étude comparative avec celles des équivalents français proposés par notre ouvrage de référence Le Multidictionnaire de la langue française. Il s’agit de mettre en scène le témoignage de la presse écrite en termes des usages des calques par rapport aux équivalents français en cours des calques en question. Après avoir fait différents constats significatifs concernant le nombre des occurrences relevées des deux groupes, nous avons été capable de vérifier l’hypothèse proposée en ce qui concerne l’usage fréquent des calques à l’anglais dans le français québécois. Ainsi nous avons constaté que malgré la présence et la vitalité des calques à l’anglais, ceux-ci ne sont pas en mesure de rivaliser avec leurs équivalents français et ce dans un corpus de la presse écrite québécoise.

The present study examines how Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on May 8, 2018 was framed in political cartoons published in the American and French media. The paper offers a thematic analysis of cartoons published from May 8 to June 8, 2018, the peak period for publication of cartoons on the Iran nuclear deal, and accessed via Google images. The paper applies the five categorizations of news frames identified by Semetko and Valkenburg (2000)—the conflict frame, human interest frame, economic consequences frame, responsibility frame and morality frame—to the selected cartoons to identify whether the frames used in the political cartoons vary between the American and French news outlets. This comparative study shows both divergence and convergence in the issues and concerns covered in the media of the both countries.

Since their appearance, cartoons and their creators took interest in social and political facts and figures. Often a more direct witness than a text, cartoons were quickly transformed from their initial entertaining role, to a tool to attack oppressors and reveal social injustices. To easily communicate with their public, they had to share the same codes and experiences that lived their audience in the society. Various social factors were sometimes unconsciously transmitted in the drawing through the psyche of the cartoon’s creator, which was formed during his life, and sometimes consciously applied in the cartoon’s decoration, appearance or the movement of the characters in order to further elucidate the message. Therefore, cartoon analysis must take account of all social elements at the time of cartoons’ production and reception. In this area, French specialists, especially Roland Barthes are among the leading figures who have worked on the role of socials factors in image analysis. In this article, their opinions are applied to cartoon analysis in order to better understand the way a cartoon is intended to send a message to its public.
