Foreign Language Development in ADHD-Diagnosed and Non-Diagnosed Children: An Experimental Research(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزههای تخصصی:
Objective: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent behavioural disorders among children in which L1 impairments are often displayed. There is a conventional assumption that ADHD-diagnosed children experience difficulties in L2 development as well. The present research aimed at investigating possible L2-related behaviours of ADHD-diagnosed children. Methods: To track L2 profiles among ADHD children, this mixed methods study examined L2 learning performance of ADHD-diagnosed children in terms of English phonological, lexical, and syntactic development compared with typically developing children. To this end, 10 ADHD-diagnosed and 10 typically-developing children were recruited from a public primary school located in Kerman, Iran, throughout the 2022-2023 academic year. The participants were then assigned to two experimental groups and given the English instructions with the same instructor. Results: The quantitative results showed that ADHD-diagnosed learners underperformed the typically-developing learners in all phonological, morphological, and syntactic production and recognition tests. However, the only significant difference was in the phonological recognition test (p = 0.04). Also, the qualitative results demonstrated that both groups were almost equally engaged in classroom interactions. Conclusion: The findings highlighted the importance of speech processing and sustained attention in lexical and syntactic learning ability among ADHD students. The implications of the study for L2 instructors were discussed.
The Effect of Foreign Language Anxiety on EFL Students’ Cognitive Processing in Working Memory(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزههای تخصصی:
Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of foreign language anxiety (FLA) on English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) students’ cognitive processing of linguistic stimuli.
Methods: The participants were 179 upper-intermediate or advanced EFL learners from different branches of an English language teaching institute. They were asked to fill out the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) questionnaire and then, considering their scores, were randomly assigned to high-anxiety and low-anxiety groups. To analyze the EFL learners’ cognitive processing of linguistic stimuli, a semantic decision task was used in the present study. In this task, participants saw a pair of words presented one after each other and were asked to decide whether the target word was related in meaning to the preceding prime word. Mixed Factorial Repeated Measure ANOVA was run on error rate (ER) data to establish the potential interaction between primes and targets. To reveal any potential anxiety effects, anxiety was run as a between-subject factor in the analysis.
Results: The findings showed a statistically significant effect of anxiety on cognitive processing of linguistic stimuli with respect to ER. More specifically, the EFL students in the low-anxiety group made fewer errors in comparison to their counterparts in the high-anxiety group.
Conclusion: The findings are attributed to the attentional control theory and cognitive overload of working memory, cognitive interference theory, and the specific nature of the task used in the present study. The results emphasize the fact that FLA could result in deficits in cognitive processing of linguistic stimuli by foreign language learners.
Developing and Validating the Educational Package of Wisdom and Its Effectiveness on Self-compassion and Psychological Well-being of Students(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزههای تخصصی:
Wisdom can be understandd as a psychological competence in facing difficult and ambiguous or unsolvable problems of life and helps people endure or cope with complex and uncertain life conditions in the future. Also, wisdom is based on experience. Experience in itself is not necessarily effective, but lessons learned from successes and failures that people gain are helpful. The present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effectiveness of the educational package of wisdom and self-compassion and psychological well-being in students. Also, this research is semi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The statistical population was all undergraduate students of psychology at Azad University, Rodehen branch, in the academic year of 2021-2022 Among them, 45 students have been randomly replaced in control and experimental groups. The research tool included Nef self-compassion questionnaire and Rif psychological well-being. For this purpose, the educational package of wisdom was first designed and compiled based on the theoretical foundations and also the existing packages according to the target group and was approved by the experts. Then, from both control and experimental groups, in a pre-test session, including the implementation of research tools, the students of the experimental group were taught wisdom training package during 8 90-minute sessions, 2 sessions per week And finally, after the completion of the training sessions, a post-test was taken from both groups. The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance test in SPSS26 software.
The Structural Equation Modeling of Responsibility Perception and Formative Assessment with the Mediating Role of Self-Regulated Learning Strategies in Students.(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزههای تخصصی:
The aim of this research was to model the structural equations of students' sense of responsibility and formative assessment by teachers, with the mediating role of self-regulated learning strategies among students. The research method was applied in terms of purpose, descriptive-correlational in terms of data collection, and quantitative in nature. The statistical population included all students in the Zanjanrud region for the academic year 2023-2024, totaling 258 individuals. For sampling, a proportional stratified method was used, and based on the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) table, 152 individuals (139 female students and 119 male students) were randomly selected for this study. The research tool consisted of three types of questionnaires: the formative assessment questionnaire by Yusefi Afrashteh and colleagues (2014), the sense of responsibility questionnaire by Kordloo (2008), and the self-regulated learning strategies questionnaire by Pintrich and De Groot (1990). For data analysis, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test, Bartlett's test of sphericity, and structural equation modeling were employed. The findings of the study indicated that self-regulated learning strategies play a mediating role between teachers' formative assessment and students' sense of responsibility. Therefore, it can be concluded that self-regulated learning strategies act as a mediator in the relationship between formative assessment and students' sense of responsibility, and that formative assessment, through continuous feedback, helps to enhance their sense of responsibility and improve their learning strategies. Accordingly, it is recommended that educational programs and interventions be designed based on formative assessment to strengthen self-regulated learning strategies and sense of responsibility among students.
The effect of rumination on cognitive performance and sports performance with the mediation of sleep quality(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)
حوزههای تخصصی:
Objective: This study aimed to examine the impact of rumination on both cognitive and sports performance, with sleep quality serving as a mediating factor. Methods: The research was practical in purpose and employed a structural equation correlation design, conducted in a field setting. The statistical population consisted of all student athletes who participated in the table tennis tournaments in Khorasan in 2022, totaling 97 individuals. Sampling was performed using a census method, with 80 participants consenting to engage in the study. Data were collected using the rumination questionnaires developed by Nolen-Hoeksema and Morrow (1991), a sports performance scale by Charbonneau et al. (2001), a cognitive performance assessment by Folstein et al. (1975), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (1989). For data analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient and path analysis modeling were utilized. Results: The findings indicated that rumination has a direct influence on both cognitive and sports performance (P=0.01). Furthermore, rumination significantly affects these performances indirectly through the mediation of sleep quality (P=0.01) among student athletes. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, rumination is correlated with cognitive and sports performance both directly and indirectly via sleep quality. It is recommended to engage a sports psychologist to conduct educational workshops on rumination management and to monitor and regulate the sleep patterns of student athletes.
