این تحقیق در ابتدا به بررسی نقش تفکر انتقادی در باورهای خودکارامدی دانشجویان زبان انگلیسی می پردازد. سپس تاثیر جنسیت به عنوان عاملی تعدیل کننده در رابطه میان تفکر انتقادی و خودکارامدی دانشجویان مورد بررسی قرار می گیرد. در پایان، تفاوت میان زنان و مردان به لحاظ سطح تفکر انتقادی و خودکارامدی آنان مورد مطالعه قرار می گیرد. به منظور نیل به این اهداف، از 86 دانشجوی زبان انگلیسی خواسته شد که به سوالات پرسشنامه تفکر انتقادی واتسون-گلیزر و پرسشنامه خودکارآمدی یادگیرنده زبان انگلیسی پاسخ دهند. یافته ها نشان داد که رابطه معناداری میان تفکر انتقادی و خودکارامدی دانشجویان وجود دارد و از میان پنج سازه تفکر انتقادی، تعبیر و تفسیر دارای بالاترین همبستگی با تفکر انتقادی است. نتایج همچنین نشان داد که جنسیت به عنوان عامل تعدیل کننده تاثیری در رابطه میان تفکر انتقادی و خودکارامدی ندارد. افزون بر آن، تفاوت معناداری میان زنان و مردان به لحاظ سطح تفکر انتقادی و خودکارامدی آنان مشاهده نگردید.

مطالعه حاضر به بررسی رابطه بین تفکر انتقادی و هوش هیجانی دانشجویان زبان انگلیسی می پردازد. علاوه بر این، نقش سن و جنس به عنوان عوامل تعدیل کننده رابطه بین تفکر انتقادی و هوش هیجانی را بررسی می کند. هم چنین روا بط بین سن و جنس دانشجویان با هوش هیجانی آنان مورد مطالعه قرار می گیرد. برای این منظور، 86 دانشجوی زبان انگلیسی آزمون تفکر انتقادی واتسون گلیزر و پرسشنامه هوش هیجانی بارآن را تکمیل کردند. نتا یج بدست آمده ازتحلیل آماری همبستگی بر روی داده ها بیانگر وجود رابطه معناداری بین تفکر انتقادی و هوش هیجانی دانشجویان می باشد. از میان فاکتورهای تفکر انتقادی دو عامل انعطاف پذیری و مسئولیت اجتماعی بالاترین همبستگی را با هوش هیجانی داشته و پیش بینی کننده های مثبتی برای هوش هیجانی بودند. افزون برآن، یافته های تحقیق نشان داد که جنس و سن رابطه ی میان تفکر انتقادی و هوش هیجانی را تعدیل نکرده و هیچ کدام از این دو عامل نقش معناداری درهوش هیجانی دانشجویان ایفا نمی کنند.

Motivation can be conceptualized as a dynamic process which is a key contributor to mastering a second language. This study used the L2-Motivational Self System as the basis for a conceptual framework for studying the effects of external factors on learners' motivation. In particular, the role of teachers and parents was studied as the external facets of predicting learners' motivation. One hundred and twenty EFL teachers along with 1,270 of their students participated in the study. To measure motivation, the Persian version of Dörnyei's L2 Motivation Self-System Scale was utilized. Three key components of the scale, namely, criterion measure, attitudes to L2 learning, and instrumentality promotion were employed in measuring motivation. To assess the role of family in motivating learners, another subscale of Dörnyei's questionnaire, i.e., family influence was used. To gauge teacher burnout, the educator version of the Maslach burnout inventory (MBI-ES) was used. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was run to analyze the causal relationships among the variables. The results revealed that teacher burnout negatively influenced learners' criterion measure and their attitudes to learning English. However, the path leading from teacher burnout to instrumentality promotion was not significant. Furthermore, three direct, positive, and significant paths leading from family influence to learners' criterion measure, instrumentality promotion, and attitudes to learning English were detected. Finally, findings are discussed with reference to the context of Iran

Directed Motivational Currents: The Implementation of the Dynamic Web-Based Persian Scale among Iranian EFL Learners(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Directed motivational current (DMC) ̶ as a novel strand in L2 motivational field ̶ is a robust motivational drive fueled by a highly valued goal and capable of stimulating and sustaining long-term behavior. The present study explored English as a foreign language students’ Directed Motivational Currents by validating the dynamic web-based Persian version of the scale, finding the most crucial motivational currents, and exploring its association with students’ proficiency and educational levels. This is accomplished by translating the DMC Disposition Scale (Muir, 2016) which measures two facets of easy flowand challengethrough twelve items as the first step and utilizing the validated questionnaire to explore the most significant motivational currents of students by analyzing students’ responses on open-ended items of the questionnaire (qualitative phase) and finding the association between DMC and proficiency level as well as DMC and educational level (the quantitative phase) as the second step. The results of reliability estimates and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) demonstrated acceptable reliability and validity indices of the Persian version of DMC Disposition Scale. The results also indicated that most of the DMCs experienced by students were competitively self-referenced experiencesrather than competitively other-referencedobjectives. Moreover, a significant difference was observed between elementary and upper-intermediate proficiency levels of students regarding DMC with upper-intermediate learners experiencing more levels of motivational currents than the elementary counterparts. BA and MA students of English were found to experience more levels of DMCs than diploma learners. The most significant cases in the qualitative phase as well as the discussion on both parts are presented.

DE-MOTIVATORS, BURNOUT AND LANGUAGE ACHIEVEMENT IN AN IRANIAN EFL CONTEXT (بررسی ارتباط بی انگیزگی با فرسودگی تحصیلی و موفقیت تحصیلی دانشجویان ایرانی زبان انگلیسی)(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

مطالعه ی حاضر به بررسی بی انگیزگی 250 دانشجوی زبان انگلیسی و ارتباط آن با فرسودگی ذهنی آنان می پردازد. این مطالعه همچنین به بررسی تاثیر غیر مستقیم بی انگیزگی و تاثیر مستقیم فرسودگی ذهنی بر موفقیت زبانی دانشجویان ایرانی می پردازد. به منظور دستیابی به اهداف مذکور، مطالعه ی پیش رو در دو مرحله طراحی شده است. فاز اول آرایه ای از مراحل های مختلف به منظور بررسی روایی نسخه ی فارسی مقیاس بی انگیزگی که توسط ساکایی و کیچوکی (2009) طراحی شده است می باشد در مرحله ی دوم محققان با استفاده از پرسشنامه ی روایی شده ی بی انگیزگی و پرسشنامه ی فرسودگی ذهنی مازلاک (نسخه ی دانشجو) به بررسی رابطه ی میان بی انگیزگی دانشجویان و فرسودگی ذهنی آنان که شامل سه بعد خستگی عاطفی ، بدبینی، و عدم کارایی تحصیلی است می پردازد. نتایج حاصل از برآورد پایایی و تحلیل عاملی تأییدی (CFA) در فاز اول مطالعه نمایانگر شاخصه های روایی و پایایی قابل قبول نسخه ی فارسی بی انگیزگی بود. یافته های مرحله دوم نیز از طریق مدل سازی معادلات ساختاری (SEM) نشان داد که بی انگیزگی دانش آموزان تاثیر مثبتی بر میزان فرسودگی ذهنی انان دارد. در میان شش عامل بی انگیزگی، منابع اطلاعاتی مورد استفاده در کلاس و عدم علاقه بیشترین تاثیر را به همراه داشت. فرسودگی ذهنی نیز به نوبه خود تاثیر منفی بر پیشرفت زبانی دانشجویان را نشان داد.

The present article experimentally studied the impact of mindfulness-cultivating intervention on various dimensions of learning. The mindfulness-cultivation techniques employed in the experimental group involved observance of all experience, analyzing, planning, judging, reasoning, and fantasizing (van Vreeswijk, et al., 2014). Furthermore, Pirson et al.’s (2012) contention that mindfulness encompasses four facets of attributes:; novelty producing, novelty seeking, engagement, and flexibility informed the selection of techniques. Learners’ level of proficiency was checked before the treatment. Before and after the treatment, three questionnaires were employed: 1) Langer Mindfulness Scale 2) Reflective thinking questionnaire 3) Positivity Scale. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) results demonstrated, approximately 50 percent of variance in reflective thinking was predicted by these techniques. Furthermore, the results via independent samples t -test demonstrated that positive orientation and language achievement promoted in the experimental group, thus implying that the intervention executed in the experimental group was effective in enhancing these two factors as well.

The present study examined the effect of mobile assisted language learning (MALL) on Iranian EFL learners' idiom learning and perceptions of classroom activities. To do so, this study was carried out in six classes at Imam Reza International University in Mashhad, Iran. The participants included 114 BA students of Teaching English field. The present study was quasi-experimental that utilized a mixed methods research design. It contained a control group with 45 participants and an experimental group with 69 participants. MALL for teaching idioms via Telegram was considered as a treatment in experimental group. In the present study, Telegram app was chosen because the researcher, the teachers, and the participants had similar experience of using this app. Pictures, texts, audio, and video files, were used as the materials in teaching idioms. Students’ Perceptions of Classroom Activities scale designed and validated by Gentry and Gable (2001) and translated into Persian and validated by Ghanizadeh and Jahedizadeh (2015) was used for assessing students’ perceptions of classroom activities (interest, choice, joy, and challenge). Twelve students in experimental group sat for an interview which was audio and video recorded. In the interview sessions, students were asked about the experience of informal learning in this research, the materials used, pros and cons toward the channel and MALL. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of mobile phone usage in enhancing EFL university students’ idiom learning as well as in students’ perceptions of classroom activities with the highest differences observed in challenge and joy perceptions. The results of the qualitative phase were also in line with those of the quantitate phase.

مقایسه جایگاه زن در فرهنگ ایران و ایتالیا از طریق بررسی مقابله ای ضرب المثل های فارسی و ایتالیایی(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

ضرب المثل ها پاره های ادبی هستند که بخش عمده ای از زبان و فرهنگ یک ملت را تشکیل می دهند و بیانگر نگاه مردم جامعه به مسائل مختلف بوده و لذا نقش بسزایی در تعیین هویت فرهنگی هر ملت دارند. هدف پژوهش حاضر مقایسه جایگاه زن در فرهنگ ایرانی و یک کشور اروپایی، به کمک آشنایی دیرینه محقق با زبان و فرهنگ ایتالیایی از طریق تحلیل مقابله ای ضرب المثل های دو زبان است. این تحقیق در چندین مرحله انجام گرفت: گردآوری 1384 نمونه فارسی و ایتالیایی مرتبط با موضوع زن، ترجمه نمونه های ایتالیایی، حذف مثل های تکراری یا نامفهوم (جامعه آماری برابر با 984 ضرب المثل)، ترجمه و ارائه برخی توضیحات فرهنگی، دسته بندی موضوعات مثل ها، یافتن وجوه اشتراک و افتراق بین نمونه های دو زبان، آمارگیری، و مقایسه عددی. نتایج نشان می دهند که فرهنگ دو کشور در برخی موارد مشابه و در برخی دیگر بسیار متفاوت اند. اما فرهنگ ایرانی، در زمینه هر دو قطب عمده متضاد چه تحقیر و توهین به زن و چه تکریم وی نسبت به فرهنگ ایتالیایی جایگاه نخست را به خود اختصاص می دهد.

EFL Students’ Evaluation Apprehension and Their Academic Achievement, Gender, and Educational level: Towards Designing and Validating a Comprehensive Scale

Student evaluation apprehension as one of the detrimental factors in an English as a foreign language (EFL) context, reduces and gradually diminishes student participation in classroom activities, since learners are mostly concerned with how others (teacher and classmates) evaluate/judge their performance. Due to the fact that the studies considering the important role of student evaluation apprehension are scarce in number, this study was conducted to validate the newly-designed questionnaire via exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and find the relationship between student evaluation apprehension and academic achievement, gender, and educational level of 258 EFL students. The results from EFA, CFA, and reliability analyses revealed that the new questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument measuring EFL students’ evaluation apprehension. Moreover, a significant negative correlation was observed between student evaluation apprehension and academic achievement. Besides, it was found that females experience evaluation apprehension more than males, and BA students were also found to have more evaluation apprehension than their MA counterparts.

Exploring Translation Students’ Perceptions about Designed Materials for Legal Translation Course

The present study intended to design some materials based on the guidelines of González Davies (2004) for ‘legal texts and correspondence translation’ course of graduate students majoring in translation studies. To this end, first a checklist on the basis of Gentry and Gable's (2001) model was designed to find out the participants’ perceptions of the tasks. Next, the researchers designed related tasks based on Gonzales Davies’ (2004) guidelines inspired by Kiraly’s (2000) constructivist approach. In the third phase, the participants were given the designed tasks published in a book during10-12 sessions. Finally, the researchers held a semi-structured interview with the participants to find out their perceptions towards classroom activities as well as their translation ability. The results indicate that the participants had positive perceptions regarding the designed tasks. The findings have implications for translation classroom courses.

طراحی و اعتبارسنجی پرسش نامة خودکارآمدی ترجمه و ارتباط آن با راهبردهای حل مسئله در ترجمه(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

ماهیت بین رشته ای مطالعات ترجمه دیدگاه های وسیعی را در سال های اخیر در حوزة تحقیق و پژوهش این رشته گشوده است. در این راستا، توجه نه تنها به سمت محصول نهایی ترجمه، بلکه به پردازش و نقش آفرینان اصلی آن معطوف شده است. از جمله این امور بررسی فرآیندهای شناختی و احساسی مترجمان است. با نظر به تأثیر در خور توجه مفهوم خودکارآمدی بر رفتار و کنش افراد، پژوهش حاضر بر آن است تا رابطة میان خودکارآمدی مترجمان و راهبردهای حل مشکل در ترجمة آن ها را مورد ارزیابی قرار دهد. بدین منظور، دو پرسش نامه در زمینة مفاهیم پایه ای خودکارآمدی و راهبردهای ترجمه طراحی شده و اعتبار آن را سنجیده شده است. هفتادو شش دانشجوی ارشد و دکتری ترجمه در این تحقیق شرکت کردند. نتایج تحلیل داده و محاسبات آماری رابطة معناداری را بین احساس خودکارآمدی مترجمان و راهبردهای حل مشکل در ترجمه آن ها نشان داد. از آنجا که نقش باورهای کارآمدی مترجمان در گزینش و اعمال راهبردها در مواجهه با مشکل در فرآیند ترجمه حائز اهمیت است، یافته های این پژوهش در آموزش و برنامة تحصیلی ترجمه مفید خواهد بود.

The present study aimed to analyze English as Foreign Language (EFL) teachers and students’ perceptions on learning effectiveness, negative factors, positive features, and future directions of virtual education. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, open-ended questions, and journals. All the data were carefully studied and coded through MAXQDA (version 2020) software. The results indicated that poor internet connection along with low interaction between students and the teacher were the most frequently noted negative points of online classes. Accordingly, providing high-speed internet, supporting students, and having more interaction are the first essential elements in virtual education. Besides, flexibility, time-saving, and reduced cost considerations were considered the positive aspects of online classes. Regarding students’ learning performance, the results were of mixed nature. Providing training courses for teachers, using different materials during the class, and the most importantly having high-speed internet are some implications of this study.

The Contribution of Argumentation to Learning Approach, Inference, and Interpretation: The Case of Seminary Education at the Islamic Propagation Office (IPO)

This study examined the impact of argumentation on learning approach and critical thinking (inference and interpretation) in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes among Islamic studies or seminary students in Mashhad. It was conducted in two classes: an experimental group and a control group, each with 12 female students. Data for the study were collected using pretest and posttest assessments of the Critical Thinking Appraisal (CTA) and a learning approach questionnaire. The Farsi version of Watson-Glaser’s Critical Thinking Appraisal (CTA) was used to measure participants’ inference-making and deduction. Bigg’s Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ) was employed to assess participants’ learning approaches, measuring two broad approaches: deep approach and surface approach, with four subscales: surface strategy (SS), surface motive (SM), deep strategy (DS), and deep motive (DM). The experimental group received instruction based on logical argumentation as the treatment. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the argumentation method in improving participants’ learning approach and critical thinking (inference and interpretation). Specifically, the results of the independent samples t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between the two groups in the degree of their Inference (t = 2.33, p = .03), Interpretation (t = 2.25, p = .03), Deep Approach (t = 2.88, p = .01), and Surface Approach (t = -2.16, p = .04) after the treatment. The findings of this study can be beneficial for teachers of Islamic propagators in enhancing their students’ learning approach and critical thinking through the use of argumentative instruction.

به تازگی مفهوم جدیدی به نام ذهن آگاهی در مطالعات آموزشی راه یافته است. این مفهوم به عنوان آگاهی خود-رهبرانه و بدون قضاوت فرد از تجربیات حسی و شناختی فعلی خود توصیف می شود. مطالعه حاضر به بررسی رابطه بین نگرش مثبت، ذهن آگاهی و تفکر تاملی در میان زبان آموزان ایرانی میپردازد. نمونه مورد مطالعه شامل ۲۵۴ زبان اموز زبان انگلیسی بودند و به عنوان ابزار پژوهشی، از سه پرسش نامه استفاده شد: 1) مقیاس ذهن آگاهی لنگر 2) پرسش نامه تفکرتاملی 3) مقیاس نگرش مثبت . چهارده گویه مربوط به مقیاس ذهن آگاهی سه عامل شامل تلاش برای کشف جدید ، تولید نوآوری و مشارکت را ارزیابی می کند. ، پرسش نامه تفکر تاملی مشتمل بر شانزده گویه است که چهار نوع مختلف از تفکر تاملی - فعالیت معمول ، فهم ، تامل و تفکر انتقادی - را ارزیابی می کنند. مقیاس هشت موردی از مثبت نگری برای اندازه گیری نگرش مثبت استفاده شد . برای بررسی رابطه ذهن اگاهی، نگرش مثبت و تفکر تاملی زبان اموزان ، از مدل سازی معادلات ساختاری استفاده شد. یافته ها نشان دادند که نگرش مثبت به طور قابل توجه و مثبتی، ذهن آگاهی را افزایش می دهد و با یکی از سه زیرشاخه های ذهن آگاهی، یعنی خلق نوآوری، بالاترین همبستگی را نشان داد. فهم، تأمل و تأمل انتقادی از میان چهار ویژگی تفکر تاملی ، همگی به طور معناداری با بالاترین تأثیر بر تأمل توسط ذهن اگاهی پیش بینی شدند. علاوه بر این، سازه دوم ذهن اگاهی، جستجوی نوآوری، با درون نگری مرتبط شناخته شد.

In the postmodernism era, considering the new technological facilities, researchers are trying to improve the traditional learning process by presenting some new learning models. One of these models, called blended learning, tries to present special ways and solutions to blend synchronous and asynchronous learning. The flipped classroom, subcategorized in this model, reverses the traditional classroom formats. This study investigates the role of this model in EFL learners’ perceptions of class activities and their language achievement. In doing so, two classes in a high school, 10th grade, were selected as the participants. In the experimental group, the flipped learning approach was implemented through the creative software, developed by the researchers. The software was designed based on the book that students were supposed to study that semester. The software framework was Storyline which is a suitable software for creating interactive courses. Learners’ perceptions were also measured by using the translated version of the 'Students Perceptions of Classroom Activities' scale. The results revealed that the flipped learning approach could account for over 70 percent of Choice perception, about 50 percent for Challenge, and 10 percent for Joy perception. The results also demonstrated significant impact of flipped learning on language achievement. The results of this study would help instructors and practitioners to use technology in their teaching program and be optimistic about its amazing results in their learners’ outcomes.
