پژوهش پیش رو با معرفی اریش (اریک) فروم به عنوان عضوی از مکتب فرانکفورت آغاز می شود و در ادامه توضیح می دهد که او چگونه با خوانش منحصر به فرد خود از فروید و آثارش، به مرور از دیگر اعضای این مکتب فاصله گرفت. فروم که از وی حتی در غرب به عنوان روشنفکری گمنام یاد می شود، در ایران شخصیتی است فراموش شده، که کمتر مورد توجه ادیبان و پژوهش گران قرار گرفته است. جستار حاضر بر آن است تا نخست مفاهیمی چون منش های بی ثمر و غیر خلاق را توضیح دهد، به ویژه منش محتکر، منش بهره کش، منش بازاری و منش مرده گرا-ویران گر، و سپس به تحلیل رمان دودکش شیطان (۱۹۹۷)، اثری ادبی به قلم آنه لندزمن بپردازد که آن گونه که باید مورد توجه منتقدان ادبی قرار نگرفته است. این رمان دوران استعمار (۱۹۱۰-۱۹۱۵) را در آفریقای جنوبی به تصویر می کشد. از آن جا که فروم معتقد است که با واکاوی شخصیت های غالب جامعه می توان پی به ساختار کلی اجتماع برد، در این پژوهش تلاش بر آن است که با تحلیل شخصیت آقای هنری، سپتامبر، و خانواده ی جاکوبز، دریچه ای به ساختار کلی اجتماع آن روز آفریقای جنوبی تحت استعمار گشوده شود.

Beyond Territorial Colonization: A Study of Orientalist Self-Perceptions among Iranians

While Iran was never formally colonized by Western powers, it’s governing regimes before the Islamic revolution were loyal to both the East and the West;  the country was therefore more or less a de facto colony of Russia, Great Britain, and the United States. One of the most pernicious consequences of such presences can be described as the "colonization of the mind," which has subtle and lasting manifestations. Using Edward Said's four major characteristics of Orientalism (i.e., binary opposition, over-generalization, fear and control, and depicting the Orient as stuck in past primitiveness), the present paper attempts to analyze the self-perception of the Iranians toward themselves to see whether the way they perceive themselves is similar to the Western discourse of the "Orient." In the first step, a number of interviews with a representative sampling of the population under investigation were conducted to develop a questionnaire. The questionnaires were then distributed and 650 responses were collected. The survey was meant to assess the four components of Orientalism as proposed by Said, among the respondents. It also contained questions about the respondents' lifestyle, their perceptions toward nationalism, and media consumption. The results reveal evidence of Orientalist self-perception among the Iranians when they compare themselves with the West.

Given the history of conflict between Iran-Iraq (1980-1988), the present paper investigates whether interpersonal contact between Iranians and Iraqis, through religious tourism, has assisted in changing the perception of the Iranians toward the Iraqis. To this aim, the researcher chooses the Arbaeen Pilgrimage—the world’s largest annual gathering in Karbala—and the interaction of the Iranians with Iraqis as its case study. To observe the cultural contact of foot pilgrims to Karbala, the researcher traveled to Iraq in 2019 for five days to participate in a 78 km. walk from Najaf to Karbala. The paper uses semi-structured face-to-face interview as research method.  To account for diverse demographic characteristics of pilgrims, potential participants were approached randomly. Overall, 24 interviews with 14 female and 10 male Iranian pilgrims were conducted. Participants comprised Iranian people aged 14 to 57. Each interview lasted from 20-35 minutes. The paper uses integrated threat theory and Contact Theory to analyze the data. It will be argued that under Gordon Allport four optimal conditions-- i.e., a.) equal status; b.) common goals; c.) intergroup cooperation, and d.) support of social and institutional authorities-- intergroup contact between Iranians and Iraqis has helped in reducing prejudice, while diminishing old hostilities.

Once treated like a pariah in the realm of literary criticism, the genre of travel writing becomes a legitimate object of critical inquiry after Said’s Orientalism in which he critically examines French and English travel books written in the context of colonialism. Similarly, this article embarks on reading Alexander Burnes’ Travels into Bokhara in the light of Orientalism. The travelogue recounts Burnes’ journey to Afghanistan and Turkistan during the Great Game. Instead of extracting and interpreting orientalist tropes in Burnes’ travel book, the present article seeks to study its antinarrative components: those statements and praxis which are inconsistent with Orientalism’s policing and regulatory norms. It contends that the travel writer exhibits his disenchantment with orientalist vision in three ways. Firstly, through recoiling from reiterating the trope of the alleged ‘Oriental’ despotism. Secondly, via unsettling the trope of the ‘monarch of all I survey’, and finally, by demonstrating cultural receptivity towards indigenous people and their Islamic culture.

This paper examines US general election debates to discover whether or not the Republican and Democratic candidates equally present Iran as a major US foreign policy issue. Petrocik’s Issue Ownership theory was employed as the theoretical framework of this paper. The Issue Ownership theory asserts that since American voters perceive the Republican and Democratic parties to handle different sets of political, social, and economic issues better than their opponents, each party will highlight and emphasize issues that they are regarded to own during elections. In this regard, Petrocik’s theory predicts that since the Republican party is perceived to handle foreign policy and national security-related issues better than their Democratic opponents by American voters, their candidates are more likely to bring up foreign policy-related issues while Democrats are more likely to avoid such issues during presidential campaigns. Overall, 13 US general election debate transcripts from among the 16 General debates held from 2004 to 2016 were selected for analysis using the Critical Case Sampling approach. The analysis, which utilized the Critical Framework Analysis method, resulted in seven major thematic categories concerning Iran: nuclear program, threat, sanctions, negotiations, war, Iran’s influence, and sponsorship of terrorism. The study finds that although Republican candidates did present Iran as a major foreign policy issue more frequently than their opponents in US general election debates, there was an element of convergence on Iran. Therefore, contrary to what the Issue Ownership theory would have predicted, the Democrats did not typically avoid nor show any hesitancy in talking about Iran.

آمریکا پس از توافق با طالبان در دوحه، نیروهای نظامی خود را از افغانستان خارج کرد. این در حالی است که ایالات متحده در سال ۲۰۰۱، ذیل سیاست مبارزه با تروریسم و با هدف سرنگونی دولت وقت طالبان، به افغانستان حمله نظامی و این کشور را اشغال کرده بود. آمریکا از زمان حمله به افغانستان، در شش مرحله سیاست خود را در قبال این کشور و به ویژه طالبان که طی سال های طولانی در لیست دشمنان ایالات متحده بود، تنظیم کرد. اما حصول توافق اخیر با این جنبش که به معنای گذار از راهبرد تقابل به سیاست تعامل با طالبان است، نشان از تغییر در ادراک آمریکا از تهدید در افغانستان دارد. این تغییر ادراک آمریکا برای ایران، که یکی از همسایگان افغانستان است، پیامدهای راهبردی به ویژه در حوزه امنیتی دارد.ازاین رو، این پژوهش درصدد پاسخ به این پرسش اصلی است که تغییر در ادراک آمریکا از تهدید در افغانستان، چه پیامدهای راهبردی برای ایران به خصوص درزمینه امنیت خواهد داشت. در این مقاله به دلیل ماهیت پیچیده موضوع، از تلفیق روش های اکتشافی و هنجاری استفاده شده است. ترکیب نظریه های روابط بین الملل به طور خاص و نظریه ادراک تهدید با روش های پژوهشی تحلیل روندها و سناریونویسی، به لحاظ استخراج مولفه های متنوع و مداخله گر کمک کرده است.یافته های تحقیق پیش رو نشان می دهد که آمریکا در پی تغییر در ادراک خود، از افغانستان خارج شده و قدرت گرفتن طالبان را تسهیل کرده است. هرچند تهران در تعامل با طالبان بوده است، اما از قابل پیش بینی بودن رفتار آن مطمئن نیست. تهران چه بسا نگران است که طالبان به عنوان نیروی نیابتی برخی قدرت های منطقه ای و فرامنطقه ای ایفای نقش کرده و منافع امنیتی جمهوری اسلامی ایران را به مخاطره اندازد. افزون بر این، ایران درباره احتمال ظهور گروه های افراطی و تروریستی در افغانستان، نگرانی های جدی دارد. یکی از دغدغه های تهران این است که توافق آمریکا با طالبان، بر کیفیت تعامل و مواجهه این جنبش با ایران در آینده تاثیرگذار بوده و افغانستان را به سکوی جدیدی برای فشار بر ایران در حوزه امنیتی تبدیل کند. به ویژه اینکه افغانستان بیش از ۹۰۰ کیلومتر مرز مشترک با ایران دارد و هرگونه ناامنی یا نفوذ ازسوی طالبان یا گروه های دیگر می تواند تاثیری مستقیم بر امنیت ملی ایران داشته باشد. حکومت مطلق طالبان در افغانستان و همزیستی تهران با آن نیز می تواند موجب نارضایتی بخش قابل توجهی از مهاجران یا پناهجویان افغان در ایران شود.

This paper intends to examine the way in which major American media have framed Iran's Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the JCPOA). Following the nuclear agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the 5+1 powers in Vienna, the event was significantly depicted on the two major mainstream media outlets of the United States, namely CNN and Fox News. The study examines these media through framing as its theoretical approach. Framing, which is a prominent theory in communication and media studies, is concerned with the presentation of an issue in media. Using framing analysis, the study is based on data collected thorough an analysis of the JCPOA relevant transcripts broadcasted on CNN and Fox News during four strategic events within a threeyear period, starting from July 14, 2015. The collected data was analyzed by ATLAS.TI software to classify and place the selected frames into respective tables. By analyzing approximately 1200 deconstructed themes, the findings reveal the main coding-news of CNN and Fox News as Iranophobia, Iran's containment, Advocates vs. Opponents, US approach towards JCPOA, Iran's nuclear program, Iran’s economy, Role of Israel as well as the JCPOA achievements. The present paper concludes that under the impact of politicized frames in the US outlets, Iran’s nuclear program has been distorted, framed and consequently represented to the audience.

The present study was conducted to investigate how Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from Iran’s nuclear deal on May 8, 2018 has been framed in political cartoons published in French and Iranian media. In this paper, a thematic analysis of published cartoons available on Google images from May 8, 2018 to June 8, 2018 was conducted in both French and Farsi. Five categories of news frames identified by Semetko and Valkenburg (2002) were applied on selected cartoons to observe how these frames are used on political cartoons in French and Iranian news outlets. Findings of the study showed that withdrawal of Trump from Iran’s nuclear deal has been framed mostly as a threat for France and has been considered in a bilateral perspective between USA and France. For the Iranian press the withdrawal is mostly considered as a result of Trump’s mental instability and P5+1 inaction.

Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979 and the deposition of the pro-American Pahlavi regime in Iran, an interest in the country as a mythical, complex, and conflict-ridden place has magnified among the American public. Exilic Iranian memoirs began to emerge after the 1979 Iranian Revolution and surged after September 11, 2001, claiming to provide an authentic depiction and explanation of the  Iranian society and politics and the ways in which it relates to the West and Western interests. The present article aims to analyze the ways in which post-Revolutionary Iran has been framed through memoirs written by Iranian-Americans. Through a framing analysis of fifteen selected memoirs on Iran,  the article identifies and presents six main frames in the analyzed texts based on Edward Said’s Orientalism. The paper concludes that instead of providing a more or less objective depiction that acknowledges the diversity and heterogeneity of the Iranian society and politics, the selected texts reflect the existence of an industry of memoirists that produce content depicting Iran in an orientalist way. Such an approach further inhibits any meaningful understanding and rectification of the existing misconceptions.

The present study examines how Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on May 8, 2018 was framed in political cartoons published in the American and French media. The paper offers a thematic analysis of cartoons published from May 8 to June 8, 2018, the peak period for publication of cartoons on the Iran nuclear deal, and accessed via Google images. The paper applies the five categorizations of news frames identified by Semetko and Valkenburg (2000)—the conflict frame, human interest frame, economic consequences frame, responsibility frame and morality frame—to the selected cartoons to identify whether the frames used in the political cartoons vary between the American and French news outlets. This comparative study shows both divergence and convergence in the issues and concerns covered in the media of the both countries.

Islamophobia is defined as a closed-minded hatred, fear or prejudice toward Islam and Muslims that result in discrimination, marginalization, and oppression. This phenomenon was strengthened after September 11 marked a watershed in the history of America. In the wake of 9/11, Islamophobia was promulgated in a plethora of textual and visual narratives, including novel. This paper studies Islamophobia in Greg Hrbek’s latest novel Not on Fire, But Burning (2015). A close reading of the novel reveals that the novel couples Islam with terrorism and barbarity, and sets forth the Self/Other dichotomy, which is rather cherished in the discourse of Islamophobia. As observed in a long history of Islamophobic rhetoric, Hrbek’s novel depicts that certain people, undoubtedly Muslims, are outside the American system of values, ready to catch America off-guard. With the images the work promotes of Islam and its followers, it is argued that Not on Fire, But Burning reinforces Islamophobia and biased frames of reference on Islam and Muslims.

خوانش مقایسه ای ادبیات جنگ های صلیبی و ادبیات آمریکا پس از 11 سپتامبر در دو رمان آمریکایی «مرد در حال سقوط» و «تروریست»

پس ازحمله های یازده سپتامبر 2001 ، رما نها و آثار ادبی فراوانی با موضوع تأثیر این حمله ها بر افراد مختلف در داخل و خارج از ایالات متّحده به رشته تحریر درآمد. با وجود ادعای این رما نها ( مبنی بر پرداختن به تأثیر این حمله ها بر مردم آمریکا) ، نویسندگان برای توصیف مسلمانان و اعراب بیشتر از کلیشه های شر ق شناسی استفاده می کنند و به نظر می رسد، پس از یازده سپتامبر، گفتمان شر قش ناسی، کلیشه ها و قالب های گذشته را محکم تر از پیش کرده است. این مقاله بر آن است تا این گفتمان را در دو رمان ""تروریست"" (Terrorist) نوشته جان آپدایک و ""مرد درحال سقوط"" (Falling Man) نوشته دان دلیلو (Don DeLillo) را تحلیل کند؛ چراکه آپدایک و دلیلو از نویسندگان برجستة ادبیات آمریکا هستند و هردو رمان، از رمان های پرفروش نیویورک تایمز به شمار می روند. با اینکه ریشه های شر ق شناسی را باید در فرهنگ اروپا جستجو کرد، از نیمه قرن 20 و اوایل قرن 21 ، دیدگا ههای شر ق شناسانه را آمریکا شکل داده، ترویج می کند. در این مقاله سعی بر آن است تا چگونگی بازنمایی نویسندگان نامبرده از مسلمانان و ایدئولوژی آ نها مورد بحث قرار گیرد. نکته قابل توجه این است که اگرچه این رما نها در قرن بیست ویکم و با توجه به افزایش ارتباط و اطلاعات دربارة مسلمانان نوشته شده، نویسندگان مورد نظر از همان قالب ها و کلیشه هایی استفاده می کنند که از زمان قرون وسطی دربارة مسلمانان وجود داشته است.
