New Forgotten Findings by Nezari Qohestani, Naser Bajaei Shirazi, and Jalaluddin Atighi

This research investigates newly discovered poems by the poets Nazari Qohestani, Nezari Bajaei Shirazi, and Jalaluddin Atighi, which have been overlooked in literary sources. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the study first focuses on a ghazal by Nezari Qohestani, a skilled poet of the Seventh century and first quarter of the eighth century AH. He has a collection of poetry that has been edited and published by Mazaher Musafa. In Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah, five ghazals by him are included, one of which is not found in his published divan. Next, a ghazal and a quatrain by Naser Bajaei Shirazi, a contemporary of Saadi, are analyzed. A short divan has been published by Mahmoud Madaberi, and some ghazals have also been compiled by Milad Azimi. However, in Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah, a ghazal by him is mentioned that is not present in any of these compilations, along with a newly discovered quatrain from Tazkarat al-Shu'ara (a manuscript from the Malek Library, number 5319). Finally, three ghazals by Jalaluddin Atighi, a poet of the Seventh and eighth centuries AH, are analyzed. His poetry collection has been published in photo-reprint form from a manuscript in the Fateh Library in Turkey. Eighteen ghazals by Atighi are mentioned in the poetic anthology Mounes al-Oshaq wa Tuhfat al-Afaq two of which are newly discovered, along with another new ghazal attributed to him in Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah. This research emphasizes the importance of identifying and documenting newly discovered poems and contributes to the richness of Persian literature. Keywords: Newly Discovered Poems, Nezari Qohestani, Naser Bajaei, Jalaluddin Atighi.IntroductionThe book Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah, an ancient anthology of Persian literature, dates back to a historical period when Persian poetry and prose reached their pinnacle of flourishing. This work, which was kept as number 1670 in the library of Ayasofya in Istanbul, has now been transferred to the Suleymaniye Library. Afshin-Vafayi and Moradi, in an extensive and valuable introduction to the photographic edition of this anthology, discuss its history and significance, noting that it was compiled by Musafer ibn Naser Malatawi for the study of his Lord Son, Ziya al-Din Amir Mahmoud (Afshin-Vafayi & Moradi, 2010, p. 85). Additionally, Mounes al-Oshaq wa Tuhfat al-Afaq is another important literary anthology compiled and written in the 9th century Hijri by Sulayman Qonavei. This work includes a collection of poems, ghazals, tarji'at, a technical ode called ‘Raieyeh’, pieces, and several quatrains and masnavis, drawing from the works of various poets from the 6th to the 9th centuries (Yalmeha & Jamshidi, 2021, p. 5). The total number of verses in this anthology reaches 11,600, indicating its literary richness. These two anthologies are significant not only historically but also literarily, as they contain numerous poems from both well-known and anonymous poets. Considering that these works can serve as a rich source for literary and historical research, it is worth investigating them more closely to illuminate new dimensions of Persian literature.Materials and MethodsThe present study was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method. Accordingly, the manuscripts of Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah and Mounes al-Oshaq wa Tuhfat al-Afaq were used as the basis for the study. Other manuscripts and printed copies were also used to confirm or reject the attributions that were examined.Research FindingsThis research, based on historical and literary sources, has examined newly discovered poems by three poets. On this basis, poems by Nezari Qohestani, Nasser Bejei Shirazi, and Jalaluddin Atighi have been obtained that are not in their poetry divans. Based on the studies conducted, these poems were not found in poetry collections, tazkaras, or other literary texts under the name of anyone else. Therefore, based on the poetry anthologies of Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah and Mounes al-Oshaq wa Tuhfat al-Afaq, the poems in question in this research can be considered newly discovered poems by the aforementioned poets. The newly discovered poems are as follows:A newly discovered ghazal by Nezari Qohestani has been mentioned in Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah. This ghazal did not appear in Nezari 's printed divan.A newly discovered ghazal and a rubai from Nasser Bajaei Shirazi are mentioned, which are not in the short divan of Mahmud Modabari and the collections of Milad Azimi. The ghazal in question is separate from the seven ghazals that Milad Azimi mentioned from Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah.A newly discovered ghazal from Jalaluddin Atighi was found in Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah. In addition, two other newly discovered ghazals from Jalaluddin Atighi are mentioned in Mounes al-Oshaq wa Tuhfat al-Afaq, which are not in the only edition of his poems.Discussion of Results and ConclusionsThe basis of the present study is mainly two manuscripts of Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah and Mounes al-Oshaq wa Tuhfat al-Afaq. Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah includes many poems by various poets. This poetry anthology is a valuable source for finding new poems by poets. This is also true in relation to Mounes al-Oshaq Wa Tuhfat al-Afaq. The present study claims that there is a newly discovered ghazal by Nezari Qohestani, Nasser Bajeai Shirazi, and Jalaluddin Atighi each in the text of Anis al-Khalwah wa Jalis al-Salwah. These three ghazals do not appear in any of the divans or collections of poems by these poets that have been written in the form of articles. In addition, two newly discovered ghazals by Jalaluddin Atighi are recorded in Mounes al-Oshaq wa Tuhfat al-Afaq, which are not included in the photocopy of his divan. Furthermore, in the preface to the photocopy of Divan Atighi and other studies written in this regard, there is no mention of these ghazals. Furthermore, in the manuscript anthology of the Malek Library called Tazkarat al-Shu'ara, number 5319, a quatrain by Nasser Bajeai Shirazi is quoted that does not appear in any of his poetry collections.
