Exploring the Potential of a Mobile Messaging Application for Self-Initiated Language Learning(مقاله پژوهشی دانشگاه آزاد)

With the rapid expansion of deploying mobile instant messaging applications such as Telegram for the purpose of language learning, it is quite apparent that language research in this regard is lagging behind the trend. This study addressed the matter by exploring how language learners utilize a Telegram group for the purpose of language learning. In this regard, the activities of a Telegram language learning group with 74 active members was observed and recorded for a week. To capture the patterns of utilization of the group, a thematic analysis was conducted on the compiled corpus of approximately 45000 words gathered by recording the messages posted by the group’s members. The analysis indicated that the themes of utilization of the Telegram language learning group were discussing content-based topics, seeking and sharing resources, recommending conversation opportunities, sharing learning strategies, and giving corrective feedback on each other’s language.  The findings of this research illustrated the potential of mobile messaging applications for creating opportunities for self-initiated and collaborative language learning.

Teaching Writing through Telegram Social Network and its Effect on EFL Learners' Writing Performance

This study examined the effectiveness of Telegram social network on the writing performance of adult English as foreign language (EFL) learners at intermediate level. To achieve this, Oxford Quick Placement Test (2004) was administered to 46 EFL learners at Zaban-e No language institute in Talesh, Iran. Those who met the selection criterion, i.e., performed one standard deviation above and below the mean on the test were divided into two classes (n = 30): control group (n = 15) and experimental group (n = 15). Participants in the experimental group were provided with writing instruction and contributed cooperatively to the task of writing through Telegram for 8 weeks (2 sessions each week, and 90 minutes per session) while the control group underwent a traditional instruction of writing. Pretests and posttests of writing task were administered and t tests were used to compare means of test scores within and between groups. The results revealed that while the two groups were homogeneous in terms of their writing performance before the treatment, the experimental group outperformed the control group on the posttest. That is, teaching writing through the Telegram social network was a significantly effective model to improve EFL learners' writing performance.

Effect of Telegram Application on Iranian Advanced EFL Learners' Vocabulary Knowledge and Attitude

The study intended to examine the effects of Telegram on Iranian EFL learners' vocabulary knowledge and the attitude of them towards vocabulary learning. To this end, a group of 100 Iranian advanced EFL learners participated in an experimental design project. The participants were selected after they took the Oxford Quick Placement Test and they were divided into experimental and control groups. The participants of both groups had a three-week vocabulary instruction. The treatment was similar for both groups except for exercises done after the class. The participants in the experimental group were asked to fill out an attitudinal questionnaire after the treatment. Then, a vocabulary test was administered among the participants of both groups. Results of the independent-samples t-test run on the collected data indicated that participants of the experimental group outperformed those of the control group. The findings of the attitudinal questionnaire showed that the participants had positive attitude toward using Telegram. The conclusion drawn is that those in the experimental group were free in using the online group to interact with each other. Within this framework, learners in the experimental group indicated that they enjoyed this instruction as it was fun to embark on new technological learning methods

Effect of MALL on the Acquisition of Receptive and Productive Knowledge of L2 Vocabulary by Iranian EFL Learners: The Case of Telegram

This study investigated the role of Telegram, a mobile messenger app, in mastering receptive and productive knowledge of vocabulary by Iranian EFL learners. In addition, it was intended to survey EFL learners’ attitude toward using telegram to learn English vocabulary. Therefore, both quantitative and qualitative design were used. So, 57 students were selected from a language institute in Isfahan, Iran. To homogenize the participants, Oxford Quick Placement Test (OQPT) was administered and the participants were divided into two groups accordingly, a Telegram group and a control group. At the beginning of the study a checklist of words was given to the participants. Afterward, during the study, the experimental group received the treatment (teaching words via telegram), while the control group received the target words traditionally. After 8 sessions, 20-30 minutes each, an achievement test was administered to the groups. The results of Independent Sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the achievement test scores of the experimental and control group. Moreover, the participants had positive attitude about using Telegram to learn English vocabulary. The findings of this study may inspire teachers to use mobile applications and also course developers to modify and improve not only the curriculum, but also the methodology of teaching vocabulary.

Investigating the relationship between Instagram and Telegram on the security and social trust of the fourth generation (A case study of users aged 16 to 19 years old in District 12 of Tehran)(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Due to the special features of Instagram and Telegram and the newness of this phenomenon, many people in the society have not gained the opportunity or ability to know this space in detail and their lack of proper familiarity with this space, influence in the political, social, and economic fields. , has followed culture and security for them. Therefore, in this research, the relationship between the use of Instagram and Telegram with the security and social trust of users has been investigated. The method of this research is descriptive correlation type. The statistical population of the research included 16-19-year-old users in the 12th district of Tehran, and the statistical sample size was determined to be 380 people based on Cochran's formula. The survey data collection method and the data measurement tool was a researcher-made questionnaire. The findings of the research showed that the amount and history of using Instagram and Telegram is effective on security and social trust. Meanwhile, the correlation of social and cultural content on security and social trust is positive and significant, and the correlation between economic and security content with security and social trust is negative and significant. The relationship between the political content of Instagram and Telegram with trust and social security is not significant. Finally, virtual media has had an impact on the security and social trust of Tehran users.

Telegram as a Platform for the Preservation and Dissemination of Traditional Values in the Central Asian Diasporas of the Russian Federation

Widespread of digitalization has led to the emergence of the phenomenon of "digital diasporas"- virtual communities of migrants on various platforms. This paper is devoted to the study of the specifics of Telegram communities of the largest Central Asian diaspora in the Russian Federation as a channel for the preservation, transmission and distribution of traditional values of Tajikistan. The choice of Telegram communities as an object of research is due to the physical accessibility of the messenger on the territory of the Russian Federation, the peculiarities of access and patterns of Internet use on the territory of Tajikistan, where relatives of migrants live, as well as the popularity of this messaging application among users of the post-Soviet space, which is confirmed by the leadership in the consumption of mobile traffic among messengers, including in the Russian Federation. The study is supposed to use such methods as a survey of respondents, semi-structured interviews, as well as analysis of regulatory legal acts and statistical data of government departments of the Russian Federation and Tajikistan.

Insults Against Women in Telegram (Empirical Study based on the Theory of Neutralization Techniques)(مقاله علمی وزارت علوم)

Among the common crimes and deviations in virtual social networks, the crime of verbal abuse (insult) against women is the most prevalent and common. Some characteristics of social networks, such as the remoteness of communication, being virtual and intangible, the possibility of anonymity, are effective in explaining the high number of these crimes. These features give criminals the opportunity to excuse their actions with ease and lessen the twinge in their conscience. However, the main source of women's victimization should be found in the human interactions of cyber space and not its structure. Criminals sometimes justify their behavior by denying responsibility or denying injury and sometimes with the thought that the victim deserves the crime. This article tries to reveal the cause and manner of verbal abuse against women in Telegram social network. For this purpose, the analysis has been built upon the methods of a criminological theory known as the theory of "neutralization techniques". The data was collected through observation and indirect interview and the method used to analyze this data is descriptive-analytical. The findings of this research indicate that in the case of the slightest unusual behavior of a female user, she faces more and more severe reactions than in the same case for a man. Regarding their abusive behavior, they consider the virtual and intangible nature of the injuries or the guilt of the victim to be enough to neutralize their conscience.
