The Rationale Behind the Appellation of Imam ʿAlī ibn Mūsā as “al-Riḍā”: A Textual and Semantic Analysis of the Tradition: “His opponents among his enemies were pleased with him just as his supporters among his devotees were pleased with him.”

Although the narration explaining the reason for granting the epithet "al-Ri ḍā" to ʿAlī ibn Mūsā (AS), which has reached us from Imam Jawād (AS) and is cited in primary sources such as ʿUyūn Akhbār al-Riḍā and ʿIlal al-Sharāʾiʿ by Shaykh al-Ṣadūq, has received attention historically, the ambiguity surrounding its comprehensive analysis and the manner in which the Imam (P.B.U.H.),  secured the satisfaction of both friends and foes poses a challenge requiring precise investigation. This research aims to address this challenge by focusing on the key question: How did Imam Riḍā (AS), conduct himself such that both his friends and enemies were satisfied with him, and how did his conduct attract the satisfaction of both supporters and opponents? This paper employs a descriptive-analytical methodology to examine the chain of narrators ( sanad ) and the content ( matn ) of this tradition, affirming its authenticity. Furthermore, in analyzing the rationale for the eighth Imam (AS), being titled "al-Ri ḍā" , two primary approaches: political and spiritual-ethical are scrutinized. The political approach points to the efforts of al-Maʾmūn al-ʿAbbāsī to gain legitimacy through this epithet, while the spiritual-ethical approach emphasizes the widespread popularity and respect derived from the Imam's knowledge ( ʿilm ), asceticism ( zuhd ), and ethical conduct ( sul ūk akhlāqī ). The conclusion of this article suggests that the epithet "al-Riḍā" is a symbol of comprehensive satisfaction that simultaneously served the political objectives of al-Maʾmūn and reflected the exalted stature of the Imām among both his supporters and adversaries.
