A Comparison of Mexico-US Relations During the Presidencies of Obama and Trump
In recent decades, Mexico-US relations have been affected by three factors, being, trade, illegal immigration, and security issues such as drug trafficking, guns, and other transnational crimes. However, these relations have undergone different complications in various historical periods. One of the influential factors in the relationship between the two countries is the emergence of political leaders with different ideas and views. From this perspective, this study attempts to examine the attributes of the relationship between Mexico and the United States during the presidencies of Barack Obama and Donald Trump. By examining the three areas of economics, immigration and security the concept has been hypothesized that under the Obama administration, the Mexican government's willingness to strengthen economic ties and focus on a series of issues, including; helping to solve the migration crisis and securing the two countries' borders, had improved, while on the other hand, Trump recognized Mexico as the source for violent crimes, illegal immigration, and the main cause for the loss of employment opportunities in the United States. During this period, Mexican-American relations faced serious challenges. This research is based on a descriptive-analytical approach, uses a comparative research method, and relies on library-based data collection. The findings show that Obama sought to boost relative prosperity in Mexico by strengthening bilateral economic ties, thereby improving security and immigration crises, but Trump sought economic concessions in favor of the United States and tackled security and immigration crises with solutions such as walling and increasing border patrols.

چکیده
روابط مکزیک و آمریکا طی دهه های اخیر تحت تأثیر سه عامل تجارت، مهاجرتهای غیرقانونی و موضوعات امنیتی همچون قاچاق مواد مخدر، اسلحه و دیگر جرائم فراملی بوده است. بااین حال این روابط در دوره های تاریخی مختلف دستخوش فراز و نشیب های متفاوت بوده است. یکی از عوامل تأثیرگذار در نوع رابطه دو کشور ظهور رهبران سیاسی با دیدگاه های متفاوت در دو کشور است. از این منظر این پژوهش تلاش کرده ویژگی های روابط مکزیک و آمریکا را در دوره های ریاست جمهوری باراک اوباما و دونالد ترامپ مورد واکاوی قرار دهد. با بررسی سه حوزه اقتصاد، مهاجرت و امنیت، این فرضیه مطرح شده است که در دوره اوباما، از تمایل دولت وقت مکزیک برای تقویت روابط اقتصادی و تمرکز بر روی مجموعهای از مسائل، از جمله کمک به حل بحران مهاجرت و امنیت مرزهای دو کشور استقبال شد و روابط دو کشور به سمت بهبود حرکت کرد؛ درحالی که ترامپ، مکزیک را به عنوان منبع جنایات خشونتآمیز، مهاجرت غیرقانونی و همچنین دلیل اصلی کاهش فرصت های اشتغال در آمریکا می دانست و در این دوره روابط دو کشور با چالش های جدی مواجه شد. رویکرد این پژوهش توصیفی-تحلیلی، روش آن مقایسه ای و شیوه گردآوری داده ها کتابخانه ای است. یافته های پژوهش نشان می دهد اوباما سعی کرد با تقویت روابط اقتصادی دوجانبه، رفاه نسبی در مکزیک را ارتقا دهد و این گونه، بحران های امنیتی و مهاجرتی را بهبود بخشد؛ اما ترامپ در جهت گرفتن امتیازهای اقتصادی به نفع آمریکا بود و به مقابله با بحران های امنیتی و مهاجرت با راه حل هایی مانند دیوارکشی و افزایش گشت مرزی پرداخت.تبلیغات
