Shushtar is a city located in Khuzestan province which has been considered as the center of this province since the Safavid period to Pahlavi eras. Many scientists and intellectuals have emerged from this city, which indicates the scientific status of this city. With the spread of Western civilization in Iran, the education system gradually underwent a fundamental evolution in the late Qajar era. Despite this evolution, the process of establishing modern schools in Shushtar has progressed very slowly. By 1299 SH. (1920), only one modern school had been built in this city. With the formation of the Pahlavi reign, modern schools expanded widely in Shushtar. The main question of this study is “what are the main grounds and factors for the development of modern schools in Shushtar during the Pahlavi era?” It seems that Pahlavi's cultural activities, improving the level of security and health, especially during the reign of Reza Shah, and also during the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah can be considered as the main reasons. Furthermore, people's demands from the government to build new schools, and the establishment of the Knowledge Corps in the cities, the presence such new teachers in villages, and increasing the number of teachers in urban areas can be regarded as the main causes behind such development. The findings show that modern schools flourished in Shushtar during the Pahlavi period. This study was conducted using library resources, documents, and oral sources using a descriptive-analytical method.
