A review of the new urban laboratory ecosystem with emphasis on the role of virtual reality laboratories in smart development

In recent years, experiment-based urban planning has emerged as a powerful tool for creating smarter, more responsive cities. Urban laboratories have become essential spaces for testing innovative solutions to complex urban challenges, playing an increasingly important role in urban studies. Among these, virtual reality (VR) laboratories represent one of the most impactful and cutting-edge developments, offering numerous advantages over traditional urban design and planning methods. This review study aims to examine the concepts of urban experimentation, urban laboratories, and their various types, with a specific focus on virtual reality laboratories and their role in advancing urban studies. Employing a developmental approach, the research utilizes document analysis and case studies to explore the potential of VR laboratories in urban planning and design. Virtual reality technology allows designers to experience their plans in a fully immersive environment, as if they were physically present in the space. This capability facilitates collaboration among designers, planners, and other stakeholders while also increasing public participation in the design process. VR laboratories enable more accurate visualization of cities and living environments, allowing professionals to virtually test the impacts of various urban policies and development plans without the need for physical alterations. The findings of this study demonstrate that VR laboratories effectively enhance urban environments through innovative methods, facilitating the development of creative solutions to real-world challenges in urban settings. By providing a platform for precise visualization and experimentation, VR laboratories enable data-driven decision-making with greater accuracy, ultimately improving the efficiency of urban systems. Moreover, VR laboratories can significantly increase public engagement in urban planning processes. By offering rich and realistic experiences, they empower citizens to participate more effectively in urban planning and development. This increased stakeholder involvement leads to more inclusive and representative urban designs that better reflect the needs and preferences of the community. The integration of VR technology in urban planning also offers cost-effective solutions for testing and refining urban interventions before implementation. This approach reduces the risks associated with large-scale urban projects and allows for iterative improvements based on virtual simulations and feedback. Furthermore, VR laboratories contribute to the development of smart cities by enabling the integration and visualization of complex data sets. This capability supports the creation of more sustainable, efficient, and livable urban environments by allowing planners to optimize various urban systems, such as transportation, energy, and public services. In conclusion, this research highlights the transformative potential of virtual reality laboratories in urban studies and smart city development. By providing immersive, interactive, and data-rich environments for urban experimentation, VR laboratories are poised to revolutionize the way we plan, design, and manage cities. As this technology continues to evolve, it promises to play an increasingly crucial role in addressing urban challenges and creating more resilient, sustainable, and inclusive cities for the future. The continuous advancements in VR technology will enable urban planners to better anticipate and mitigate the effects of rapid urbanization, climate change, and social inequality. By integrating VR laboratories into the urban planning framework, cities can become more adaptive and responsive to the dynamic needs of their populations, ultimately fostering environments that promote well-being, equity, and innovation.
