An Overview of Gypsum-based Stucco Ornaments from Early Islamic Archaeological Sites in Neyshabur, Khorasan Razavi Province, Iran
Nishapur, as the largest city in Greater Khorasan, has preserved beautiful gypsum-based stucco ornaments due to its climate and environmental conditions. Numerous archaeological excavations have been conducted in this city, among which the most significant are the excavations carried out by the Metropolitan Museum of New York at the four mounds known as the Old City of Nishapur and the archaeological investigations at the Shadyakh site. During the excavations at the Old City of Nishapur, remains of diverse architectural ornaments were uncovered, including brickwork, gypsum-based stucco ornaments, and polychrome and monochrome murals. In the Kohandezh area, the oldest part of the Old City, evidence of the use of stucco materials was also found. Archaeological surveys at the Shadyakh site led to the discovery of numerous architectural ornaments, including gypsum-based stucco fragments and murals. These findings indicate that Shadyakh once featured magnificent architectural structures. The gypsum-based works found in Nishapur are often in the form of panels with embossed motifs. At Shadyakh, some examples with human reliefs were also identified. The stucco motifs include geometric, vegetal, and epigraphic designs, which bear a remarkable resemblance to the Abbasid gypsum-based stucco ornaments in Samarra. The backgrounds of these panels, commonly used in wall and dado ornamentation, were adorned with geometric patterns, and traces of blue and red pigments have been observed on some of them. Some of the stucco ornaments discovered by the American archaeological team have been transferred to the Metropolitan Museum and the National Museum of Iran, while others are housed in the Greater Khorasan Museum. A portion of the findings remains preserved at the Shadyakh site. This study aims to introduce the gypsum-based stucco ornaments uncovered in the archaeological excavations of Nishapur, as these artifacts hold significant value and importance, and until now, no comprehensive and focused research has been conducted on them.
